Commercial Description:
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

Bottle at the Belgian Embassy in Oslo. It pours a slightly hazy golden body under a minimal off-white head. Spices, pale malt and hops in the aroma, quite nice. The flavor has spices, malt, some bitterness, as well as a little sweetness and fruityness, and a hint of herbs. Hoppy, bitter finish, but in a moderate way. Nice and refreshing, probably a nice summer beer. Rating: 7-3-7-4-14-3.5 (080410)

Bottle, 33cl. It’s hazy in the glass, with some micro-floaties, and topped by a creamy, finger-thick off-white head. Herbs, pale malts, some perfume notes, a little caramel, tea and a hint of alcohol in the aroma. The flavor is sweet, yet dry, herbal, bitter and with a trace of alcohol. Effervescent, dry and warming in the mouth. Bitter, herbal finish. A quite nice one, with an unusual herbal touch. (090522)

330 ml bottle. A bit cloudy, reddish golden body with a big off-white head. Mild aroma of malt, spices and fruit. Flavor is malty and fruity with some rather unusually spicy flavors. Interesting, well balanced and really refreshing. (for sure the best manuka beer I have ever tasted :-) )

Bottle. High creamy and long lasting off-white head leaving nice curtains on the glass. Oranges peaches apple aroma. Fruity roasted barley malt flavor with caramel honey notes and a large shot of coriander. Low carbonation and a long bitter aftertaste.

A Mes rate: bottle at Lowlander.
Semi hazy golden brown with a good sized white head and plenty of lace. Good hoppy and bready malt aroma. Very perfumey with lovely hints of tea tree. Very unusual and rather soothing in a tea tree type way. Flavour is also interesting. Plus points for something different. Very grassy and herbal and I really like the manuka. Pleasing dry finish with some nice spice and a lovely peaty, earthy note. Really individual and rather enjoyable.

Bottle. Hazed reddish amber color. Two-finger mostly lasting white head. Dry herbal aroma, wheatish with whiffs of bubblegum and marzipan. Sweetish fruity and light spicy taste. Medium body. Soft texture. Beyond interesting, very nice and tasty in fact...
