Commercial Description:
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

Bottle. Amber coloured with a big beige head. Aroma is spicy and sweet. The taste is bitter and dry, might be the manuka? Great story by the way..

Bottle. Bought @ Kolding Vinhandel.
Pours a very hazy orange amber with a big frothy, bubbly, yellowish head. Aroma is grassy, citric, quite tripel-like. Lively mouthfeel. Flavour is incredibly dry and citric bitter - not at all off - but it sure is powerful. The manuka is very apparent and a nice addition to the brew. Lime-like is probably the best description. I kind of like it - but it should probably have been enjoyed on a hot summer day :o)

330ml bottle (One Pint Pub, Helsinki, Belgian Beer Week 2008)
Orange to brown, with a thin head. Sweet tropical fruit aroma. Slight coffee-like hint and a bit nutty maybe, and bitter. Slightly watery, but not in a negative way, it’s not thin. Refreshing and full-bodied, lots of tangy nutty tastes. I don’t know what manuka is, but it makes an interesting-flavoured brew.

Bottle. Orange light brown color. Spicy aroma with some tropical fruit. Thin. Sweet flavor with lemon, mango, ginger and other nondescript spices. Fairly short aftertaste.

Bottle from Beer Circus, Croydon. Nose of sweet spices and notes of typical belgian sweetness with the addition of a soapiness. Colour is cloudy burnt orange. Head is huge and foaming. Taste is sweet, with an initial hoppiness and taste of the what I assume is the manuka being strong, taste moves on to a very long and lingering slavo of hoppiness, malt and contrasts with the manuka. Finish is short and pleasant. A real rollercoaster. A great beer.

Bottle 0,33ltr: And again a crazy fantastic brew from "Proef" based on a recipe from captain Cook with ingredients from New Zealand. Amber coloured and strange but good sweety taste.

Bottle. Beer Circus, Croydon. Smooth beer although I’m not a massive fan, it might need some getting used to. Dark brown in colour with good carbonation. Spicy aroma with sweet finish. Not bad.

Bottle @ Café Highlander, Antwerpen. Clear amber with a frothy tan head. Sweet, fruity spice aroma. Flavours are sweet though the spices provide a semi-dry finish. Drinkable.
