Commercial Description:
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

Apparently the pigs are loose in Belgium! Try to catch some, just like I did :-)
It seems they also have their own website now. Take a look at www.captaincooker.com.

Bottle from Beer Circus, Croydon. Nose of sweet spices and notes of typical belgian sweetness with the addition of a soapiness. Colour is cloudy burnt orange. Head is huge and foaming. Taste is sweet, with an initial hoppiness and taste of the what I assume is the manuka being strong, taste moves on to a very long and lingering slavo of hoppiness, malt and contrasts with the manuka. Finish is short and pleasant. A real rollercoaster. A great beer.

[bottle] Floral aroma with some Orval-like woody bitterness and a touch of yeast. Also spicy in the nose with some white grape and pear. Hazy orangish-brown with a rocky, lasting, off-white cover. Brown sugar and spicy flavour with a little black pepper, white grape, cranberry, and walnut. Medium, woody bitterness that resembles Orval, and balances the beer quite well. Nice caramel flavour too. Medium to high carbonation, bitterness does not last too long in the finish, light to medium body.

Bottle. High creamy and long lasting off-white head leaving nice curtains on the glass. Oranges peaches apple aroma. Fruity roasted barley malt flavor with caramel honey notes and a large shot of coriander. Low carbonation and a long bitter aftertaste.

33cl bottle. unclear caramelly orange, large thick head. Beer spilled over quite a bit when i opened it. nice citrusst and sweet and spicy aroma. lemon, grape, sweetness. flavor is lemon, orange, malts caramel, mild bitterness, very faint banana. A very refreshing brew, that still has a distinct belgian touch to it. This will appeal greatly to the occational beer drinker that gets put off by too strong or too flavorfull a beer.
