Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

One-third pint, gravity dispense at GBBF. 9% abv according to the Bières Sans Frontières program. Clear copper body. Fragile bubbles on the surface. Dried fruity hops to the nose. Taste of prunes, figs, nuts and honey sweetness on a backbone of hoppy dryness. Rather sharp bitter finish. Pleasing (London, 04.08.2009).

Draft, two different times at Ginger Man and Rattle N Hum. Pours gold with a white head. Odd herbal hoppy aroma, with some sweet malt. Flavor is similar to the aroma, it honestly tasted like a poor amber ale. I was reluctant to enter this rating after initially trying this at Ginger Man, even thinking that I was given the wrong beer, but after having the same experience at RnH I feel justified. Not good.

[2429-20090807] Growler. Pizza dough yeast aroma has some sweet grainy hops. Slightly hazy, amber orange body with a quick foamy white head. More pizza dough in the flavour iwth tons of hops and grainy malt. Medium body is a little bitter. Quite tasty, hides the alcohol well, very nice and bitter.

2008-08-07. Lightly hazy golden amber body. (3+) Fruity aroma, light tropical fruit, light leafy resin. (7+) Flavour is relatively mild, resiny hops, leafy, modest bitterness throughout. Average palate. Decent, the alcohol is quite restrained throughout and it it is very drinkable, but has less oomph than I expected. Growler, Shared at Derek’s by Grub

I tried this beer at Stony Brook Beverage from theor Growler Bar. This is an amaxing Imperial IPA. It was smooth as could be. Clear golden-orange color with a whitish head. Piney hop aroma along with sweet malt. Flavor is hops, citrus, and sweet caramel malt. Well-balanced with a medium-full, somewhat bready palate.

Cask@GBBF2009. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruity hops, grass, mild nectary notes as well as some vanilla and tropical fruits. Flavour is the same along with some hints of alcohol as well. Some bready/biscuity malts as well. Quite balanced IIPA.
