Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Cask at GBBF09. Alround rating: Lychee, orange, huge malty sweetness, some honey and sultanas. A bit overly sweet.

2008-08-07. Lightly hazy golden amber body. (3+) Fruity aroma, light tropical fruit, light leafy resin. (7+) Flavour is relatively mild, resiny hops, leafy, modest bitterness throughout. Average palate. Decent, the alcohol is quite restrained throughout and it it is very drinkable, but has less oomph than I expected. Growler, Shared at Derek’s by Grub

I tried this beer at Stony Brook Beverage from theor Growler Bar. This is an amaxing Imperial IPA. It was smooth as could be. Clear golden-orange color with a whitish head. Piney hop aroma along with sweet malt. Flavor is hops, citrus, and sweet caramel malt. Well-balanced with a medium-full, somewhat bready palate.

Cask@GBBF2009. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruity hops, grass, mild nectary notes as well as some vanilla and tropical fruits. Flavour is the same along with some hints of alcohol as well. Some bready/biscuity malts as well. Quite balanced IIPA.

The appearance is an amber color, slightly darker and more brown than a regular IIPA. The aroma is caramel malts, floral hops, and a musty, sweatsock odor (but is overall decent). The flavor is piney hops, caramel, malty, bready, very enjoyable. The finish is floral hops. The mouthfeel is medium, not especially thick for the style. Overall quite enjoyable.

Cask (gravity) at GBBF 2009, Day 1 @ 9.0%. Hit the spot nicely. Quite pale gold colour. Very strong leafy hop character, accentuated by the dry-hopping. Doesn’t stray into the sweet, sticky territory of some DIPAs I’ve tried and has enough biscuity malt backing to avoid being one-dimensional. Mouthfeel is exceedingly firm and there is an intense lingering bitterness in the aftertaste that tends towards astringence but stops short of that.

Cask Conditioned Gravity Dispense GBBF 09. A crystal clear golden coloured beer with an off-white ring of bubbles. The aroma is lovely with citrus and piney notes. A good deal of lime in this big nose. The taste has good bitterness with more lemon and lime citricity. A little prickly heat in the sting at the end. A glorious body and a good beer.

Draught at GBBF 2009. An amber coloured pour with a good white head. Aroma of hops/pine. Malty, hoppy, fruity, almost sweet. Very nice indeed. Well balanced. A complex quality DIPA. I could get wrecked on this!
