| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 17, 2009 Updated: Dec 3, 2009I was the first to rate this when I had it on tap and gave it a 3.8. I have just tried the bottle from summer 2009 and am upgrading my rating. The pour is an unexpectedly light and pretty gold for an IIPA, and leaves behind a nicely laced glass. There is an odd drawing on the label - a keg roasting on an open fire? Very fine aroma of sweetly floral and resinous hops. Captain’s Reserve is a nicely saturated and piney hop nectar, with a dollop of malty sweetness. The dry, green hops are fully in charge. This has 5 diffrent kinds of hops says the label, and it is a tribute to American brewing ingenuity - no complaints on that from this rater. Ah, the beauty of an evergreen forest in a bottle. It tastes like a natural medicine, like a great beer. I salute the captain! I must add that I tried it again on tap, and again it was not as good - the bottled version is better. nickd717 (1383), Palo Alto, California, USA
