Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Growler, courtesy dchmela. This one pours a dark golden orange color with a small and foamy off white head that leaves some spotty lacing behind in its wake. The aroma is really nice showing fresh squeezed oranges, grapefruit, and citrus hops. The toasted caramel malt base comes through in the nose, but lets the hops do their thing. A really citrusy aroma on this one. The flavor follows with the juicy orange and bitter grapefruit hops, but balanced out nicely by the toasted caramel and toffee malts. The mouthfeel is full and slick with balanced carbonation and just so easy to drink. The citrus flavors really come through and set this one apart. Awesome beer.

Growler, courtesy dchmela. The body pours clear, dark golden amber in color. A small, foamy, off white head leaves some nice legging on the glass, with sugary micro-spots forming thereafter. The nose shows an abundance of juicy Florida naval orange, along with floral citrus blossoms, grapefruit, and hints of tropical mango. Under the hops lies a subdued toffee malt base that allows the perfumy citrus to work its magic. Flavors mirror the aroma, bright orange, grapefruit, and mango hop bitterness being countered nicely by lightly sweet toffee and hints of caramel. This is one of the more balanced IIPAs out there, and the depth of the fruity hops is insanely enjoyable. The body is big, slick, and balanced on the palate. Outstanding brew.

Damn, dchemela comes through with a kickass brew! I’m not even that huge of a fan of East Coast IPA’s, but this one is great. Pine hops and vanilla. Ultra smooth. Fantastic brew.

Growler. Right from the brewery! This is my most favorite beer in the world. My ratings of other beer are metered from this beer. Great pour, head and look. lots of flavor with a strong finish that keeps you wanting more! (Until you find yourself the next morning on the floor wit an empty glass in your hand!) You will LOVE it!

Thanks so much to the Carolina crew guys for setting me up with a hand bottle so that I could enjoy this one at home after the tasting. This is a big piney, grapefruity, thick and syrupy hop bomb. Right up my alley.

Thanks to Durhambeer for sharing the growler! Slightly hazy gold pour with a thick white head that slowly settle to a fine film. Resinous hops on the nose. Resinous citrus hop flavor.

Thanks durhambeer for sharing. Pours a pale translucent honey gold with a 1-2 finger white head. Looks very light. Nose is very fresh and hoppy, very resinous, citrusy, grapefruit, some mango. Flavor is very resinous and hoppy, mango, citrusy, grapefruit, mild waxy feel, very tasty. Very pungent and very hoppy. Nice balanced bitterness.
