Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Growler. Clear gold pour with a thin white head. Huge piney/resiny/skunk aroma. Flavor is just that, with a bit of caramel and orange zest. Finishes bitter but just a touch too sweet, could use a little more dryness for the abv. Still, great beer.

On tap at brewery. Pours dark gold with a frothy head. Aroma is a brilliant assortment of floral and citrusy hops, especially grapefruit. Mouthfeel is bright and crisp, and flavor begins with a citrus, rounds with some sweetness in the mid-palate, then ends on a bitter hoppy note. A really well-balanced and flavorful DIPA.

A golden IPA with a thin creamy white head. A pungent doughy aroma of hops and cream. In mouth, a well balanced mix of malts and hops, resinous and piny, with light grapefruits and fruity esters, nice and warming alcohol iin finale. Very good. On tap at Blind Tiger, NY, Dec. 27 2008.

Growler: Thanks enopacm. Aroma of hops, hop oil, fruit, pine, and slight alcohol. Poured gold in color with a small, dense, white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor is light to medium bitter and light to medium sweet. Tastes of hops, pine, light caramel, hop juice, and slight alcohol. Medium body. Smooth, lightly oily, dry texture. Average carbonation. Hoppy, sweet, pine finish is lightly dry.

Growler 6/15/08 from Larry (Goldtwins): Lightly hazy medium amber w/ a lasting off white head. Piney, resiny, & citrusy hops balanced by caramel and toffee malts. Toasty malt and a light alcohol present. Mild fruity aroma but mostly hops. Toasty and caramel malts balance the lightly hop dominant flavor. Slightly bitter in balance with a hop flavored finish. Piney and tobacco hoppy flavors from start to finish. Lightly fruity, but seems mostly from the hops. Aftertaste is semi sweet. Very smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Lightly warming alcohol, fuller body, and lighter medium carbonation. Very nice IIPA. Glad I took Larry’s advice over the doppelbock at the time!

Draft at the High Street Grill. Golden color, with aroma of grapefruit and malt. A nice IIPA, right up there with the best.

Growler at ’Cole’s Rare Beer Fest’, Buffalo, NY. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a small diminishing white head. Wonderful resiny hop aroma nicely backed by caramel malt and some fruit -- simple but awesome. Flavour of resiny piney hops along with malt and fruit again -- lovely and so delicious. Nice long bitter finish. Medium bodied. Simply put, this is a great DIPA!

Copper in color with little to no head. Strong hop aromas with some grass and citrus. Taste is weak at the start with a medium hop bitter finish.
