Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Had the Captain Lawrence Double IPA on tap at Delaney’s In New Haven. It pours a dark yellow or off orange - it is hard to put your fingers on this color. The head is amazing and the lacing is sick. the lacing follows you down the glass to near perfection. It smells hoppy but not in a way that will blow out your senses because it appears to be well balanced in both aroma and taste. This is probably one of the smoothest Imperial IPAs I have ever had. It is bitter but there is also that malt backbone that keeps it from ripping your taste buds apart.

Draft at CL. Dark golden straw in color. Hugely pungent, enticing nose of crystalline-sugared hop cones, citrus fruit, honey, clean, husky straw-scented malts, and a light dose of creamy yeast. Flavor is rich, sharp, exciting, pungent and bright, centers on mandarin oranges, some fainter grapefruit and melon notes, texture is somewhat oily and full but very smooth and palatable. Supremely delicious.

On tap at the brewery. Incredible smell of hops. The taste is almost pine with some definite sweet hops. Its sweet but almost bitter. Its not as hoppy as many IIPA’s Ive had. DEfinitely would buy again

Growler, thanks ogglethorp: Pours a translucent amber-orange. Aroma is buttery pine hops very strongly, and a citrus undertone. Very full flavor here, with a very strong pine bomb on the palate, and a higher than average bitter finish. Solid.

On tap @ The Ginger Man, NYC. Pours a amber copper color. Aroma is malt heavy with caramel malts, some piney & citrusy hops. Flavor is extremely well balanced. Caramel malts up front followed by nice hop bitterness. Please come to WNY

Growler gracioously given to me by The_Epeeist, huge thanks Chris!! Pours a coppery color with a medium sized pilowy white head. Aroma is citrus, lemon zest, caramel, pine. Flavor is citrus, pine, caramel, floral, hint of alcohol. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished with a nice balance between sweetness and bitterness. Great stuff.

Growler from Big Z’s, Huntington, NY. Pours an orange/brown with a small thick white head. Aroma predominantly of grapefruit, also some citrus, pine, and grassy hops. Flavor of bitter citrus hops, nice cookie malt. Very thick mouthfeel. For 8%, this is quite syrupy and hard to drink. I liked the aroma but the palate is too thick and muddies up the flavors.

Growler. Awesome aroma of intense, tangy grapefruit, sweet green grape. Flavor got a little muddy for me with the distinct aromatic characters getting lost amidst thick, semi-sweet malt, and turning to little more than balancing bitterness. Tasty, but not my kind of DIPA.
