Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Courtesy Dickinsonbeer. Pours amber copper color with very little head. Big malty hop aroma with additional grapefruit and pine. Nice balance of malt and hops, very smooth. Dry hoppy aftertaste that is really nice, very good. Hand Bottle courtesy sleeplopes. Pours a golden copper with a thin white head. might have gotten a little too much air in the bottle. Still, huge grapefruit nose, and earthy hoppy pine. Smooth malt taste with dry grapefruit hop bite. Even with losing some of the kick, this is a very tasty DIPA.

A translucent pour eventually produces soft lines of sedimentary fallout, creating a glimmering unfiltered look. Very pretty glowing amber color with a thin, rapidly fading off-white head. The hoppy aroma is magnificent. Fruit and floral notes are utterly dominated by juicy ruby-red grapefruit. The malty background is medium toasty and bold enough without going overboard. The flavor introduces a very smooth, moderate bitterness. Light sweetness grows and lingers after each sip. Balance and drinkability are marvelous, but I wouldn’t expect anything else from this brewery; high expectations have been met. The finish is moderately bitter and lightly sweet. The mouthfeel is medium-full, prickly, with light carbonation. Very well done.

Courtesy Dickinsonbeer. Thanks Paul. Draft Version. Pours clear copper with weak white head. The aroma is very fruity and floral with a sweet sugary orange juice soda note and flower pedals. The taste seems a bit thin (due to the low carbonation) and earthy right off followed by caramelized malts, floral hop bitterness and citrus orange to nearly lemonade (but not tart or sweet). As the taste progresses the bitterness grows as does the earthiness. Interesting interpretation of the style. It leaves mild citrus hop bitterness into the after taste.

Courtesy Dickinsonbeer. Thanks Paul!! Pours a clear orange amber, with almost no head. Big, juicy, grapefruit hoppy aroma. Not much pine, more citrus hops than anything. The flavor has a big quantity of hops as expected, and was quite bitter on the palate. Very juicy bitter finish which keeps making me crave another sip of this. Not overly done, and fairly good balance for a double IPA. This was tasty and well done. This brewery continues to impress.

Several occasions, most recently growler. Poured orange-amber with some white head. Aroma of grapefruity hops primarily, with a little malt as well. Taste is slighlty different, with an initial burst of hops that fades into malty sweetness. That was essentially what kept this beer from being 4+; needed more bitterness. Moderate mouthfeel and more hop presence in the finish. Definitely a quality IIPA.

Poured a clear amber color. Aroma is citrus hops, some piney quality as well. Flavor is a bit mellow, but the hops and malt are there. Solid.

(From a growler shipped by jjpm74) Great pine/grapefruit aroma upon opening it. Pours a clear reddish-amber with a nice white head (especially for coming from a shipped growler). Strong citrus bitterness with no detectable alcohol. Good long bitter finish. I’d love to try this bottled or on tap.

Sweet grapefruity floral dryhopped aroma. Dry, steeped tealike hop taste with malty finish, but relatively low complexity. Draft at New Beer Dist, and rerate on a 500ml bottle. $5
