Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

clear orange-y straw with rocky white head and decent lacing deep resinous pine aroma backed by a solid wall of toasted malt, burnt sugar, warming alcohol, and tropical fruit. this is what an IIPA should smell like. flavor is hoppier and more bitter, but still a nice balance of caramel malt, pine needles, and fruit. medium, slightly chewy body with modest carbonation and a long bittersweet woodsy finish.

2009 Bottle - Thanks corey70! Pours a clear lt orange with a large white head...aroma is caramel and citrus zest, some pine resin as well but is certainly more citric in nature, treacle and wild flowers...flavour is similar, lightly sticky malt up front, pineapple and grapefruit, almost herbal...not much bitterness in the mouth but it appears on the finish and lingers...the lack of carbonation makes this one come across a bit heavy and cloying, but interesting overall...

Sampled from 16 bottle shared during Dark Lord Day 2009 near table 4. Pours a clear amber brew with a thick and creamy off-white head that has some good retention and sticky lacing. Aroma of strong grapefruit and orange citrus zest that over-powers any caramel or multi-grain malt. Taste is medium to full bodied, very little carbonation if any with more heavy sweet grapefruit some papaya and caramel malt. Finish continues the grapefruit aftertaste with a nice sweet bitterness that long lasts after the finish.

16.9 oz bottle. Pours a mostly clear deep golden color with a 2 finger thick off white head that left some spotty lacing. Nose has some assertive bitterness with some citrus and grassy qualities. Flavor holds some fleshy citrus with a good amount of hop bitterness on the finish.

Pours a pale gold with big fizzy head. Nose is moderate scents of citrus, hints of pine, not a whole lot though. Taste is dominated by a moderate hop bitterness, not harsh at all, flavor of hops is light, slight pine flavor, very light body, very west coast styled IPA with a less dominant hop profile. Perfect for this sucky 80 degree night we’re having.

Clear gold color with a fluffy white head that lasts, nice lacing too boot. Nose of malts, worty with light hoppy notes. Medium bodied a bit over carbonated for my likes. Caramel malts up front, sorta bready, worty with a small hop backing. Light fruityness. Where da hops!? Fairly dry, malty finish, light earhthines. Thought this was just recently bottled? Got me? Was expecting ALOT more from Capt. Larrys, sheesh! Thanks to coldbrewky for the bottle.
