Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

16 oz bottle. Very pale, good’ lookin’, pretty much east coast Pliny. Well done clean hop monster, best of the 5 east coast imps sampled tonight (#2 was Weyerbacher Simcoe x2)

Bottle thanks to mikey711 (BA)!
Transparent gold with a large, long-lasting, fluffy white head that laces everywhere. Nose is safely bitter, lots of mint and pine with earthy hop and faint caramel. Nice balance in the flavor, neither hop-overkill or barleywine sweet-death. Lots of caramel, orange, and soft malt is balanced by more pine and fresh hop. The palate is quite juicy, though unfortunately a little watery when compared to the best. Faint interplay from the alcohol on the front-palate, and ends with a bit much at room temperature. Still, good stuff, no standouts but no mistakes, and surprisingly subdued even for always-classy CL.

Bottle pours a clean golden body with a finger and a half thick froth that leaves sticky lacing. The beer is thick. Sticks to the sides of the glass when you swirl. Being an East coast IIPA, the hops don’t tickle your nostrils quite as nicely as the West coast varieties. Lots of sugars, thick malts, grapefruit, and floral hops on the tongue. An interesting spiciness. Alcohol tingles the tip of the tongue all the way down the throat. Heavy. Also had on tap at Gingerman, which had a much stronger hop bitterness.

500ml bottle, with thanks to j12601 for the great bonus! Pours a clear light golden-yellow with a large white head that lasts a long time and leaves nice lace. Aroma is floral, pine, some fresh island fruit and light caramel. Flavor is more pine, citrus, light floral and caramel. A little lingering hops bitterness and coating mouthfeel. A tasty and solid IIPA, thanks again Jay!

Bottle, thanks Chimay67!
Fantastic appearance with a golden body and a superb foamy and stable white head that diminishes slowly to a lacing one.. Aroma of resiny hop, fine grapefruit, tons of malt and mild caramel. Very pleasant, the beer allures me to drink it. Oily body with a sudden but pleasant bit of resiny hop with grapefruit and citruses, after a moment comes a smooth palate with caramel and malt. Dry and pleasant, fruity aftertaste of hop. Veryvery nice!

Pale clear golden with a long lasting thick white foamy head. Berries dominates the aromas. Gentle fruity bitterness in the attack, medium to full bodied, pretty chewy. Then it transform into a straight forward bitterness, and a good lasting bitter finale with the alcohol showing in the end. The flavors are nice but rather in one dimension Simple, but tasty.

Cheers JoeMcphee. Very clear golden colour with a frothy white head. Strong aroma of hops, bitter spice maybe. Big hop edge in the flavour of this beer. Sharp grapefruit, citrus feel which give a bitterness that cuts through to the back of the throat. Slick texture. Very nice indeed.

9/27/2009: Captain Lawrence Captain’s Reserve IIPA... Aroma: Big citrus hop nose; grassy green hops. Appearance: Clear golden yellow; big, think off-white head. Flavor: Citrusy and malty; a bit sugary; moderate bitterness; mostly balanced. Palate: Medium body. Overall: Solid, but not enough hop character or bitterness for my taste...
