Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Clear yellow-orange pour with a light tan head. Lots of bubbles in the glass. Hoppy aroma with pine and spice. Dry flavor. Very bitter. Good malt backbone. Citrus notes with lots of piny hops.

What A nice brew, thanks to secret Santa 2009! I had an interesting Christmas today, I went nuts with crying babies, jealous brothers, etc. but after dinner of lamb, everything was great, kids playing nice, and me enjoying this fine brew, poured faint Orange, with a dense head. Lots of hops, but not sticky, very drinkable, palate is very nice, nothing mucking it up, very clean, A great beer, some one trade me another! lol, Even better, try it yourself! Great!

500 ml bottle - thanks to goryshkewych for the tasty bonus; slight haze, glowing orange and fluffy white head when poured into my DFH snifter; aromas of bitter fruits, sugary malt, pineapple, stale hops, skunk weed; body is on the thin side with mild resiny mouthfeel; hop profile in the flavors is a little weak; much more fruity than dry in the finish and the sweetness carries over the bitterness; love the nose here though; memory might not be quite right, but the nose and fruitiness reminds me a little of nugget nectar

Courtesy of Joe McPhee. This poured a very clear very amber, with nice white head and good lacing. Nose is very much of floral, greasy, and herbal hops. Mouthfeel is a bit light in body but very smooth. . Flavor is a good blend of malts and hops, with citrus and good bitterness continues all the way to the long bitter finish. A really good beer.

Very clear very light amber, but nice head and lacing. When I first saw the color, I thought I was in for a disappointment. Aroma smells just like marijuana. VERY herby and resiny, and somewhat floral and grassy hop aroma. Reminds me a lot of Pliny the Elder. A bit of sweet peach note also on the nose. Feel is a little watery, medium carbonation. Just abit malty up front, Grapefruit and grassy hops, with a little citrus bite slowly awake towards the bacl of the palate, then woodsy, herby hop bitterness and flavor really open up toward the back of the palate and the finish. Bright bitterness lasts well beyond the finish, reallt burns into the tongue for a while after. Really a great beer, but I actually wish there was as much hops in the flavor as there is in the aroma.

From a 500ml bottle into a pint glass. Pours with a ton of foamy white head which leaves lots of lacing. It has a beautiful golden hue to it. Smell is of stanky, skunky hops. Mouthfeel is sticky, sweet and medium bodied. Taste is very, very sweet with skunky hops predominating with a lot of honey and other sweetness. I’d like to have more carbonation to this. Overall, I wasn’t a big fan of it at all. WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY overrated in my opinion. Too sweet, not enough carbonation, too pricy and too much skunk to the hops. Sorry cap’n, time to let this one go down with the ship.

Malty sweet east coast DIPA. Meh. Lots of hops but not too bitter or complex, decent nose. Syrupy. A little undercarbed. Not a fan.

Bottle from hbmason -- thanks Tim! Amber pour with a huge foamy white head. It’s real sweet, with honey, brown sugar, and bready malt. Not really a hop bomb, but balanced and sweet. Taste is malty, with caramel notes right off the bat, lots of grapefruit, and a bit of heat on the end that flows into piney, grassy hops. It’s smooth and slick, a bit resiny, and has some tingly carbonation.
