Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Bottle pours a clean golden body with a finger and a half thick froth that leaves sticky lacing. The beer is thick. Sticks to the sides of the glass when you swirl. Being an East coast IIPA, the hops don’t tickle your nostrils quite as nicely as the West coast varieties. Lots of sugars, thick malts, grapefruit, and floral hops on the tongue. An interesting spiciness. Alcohol tingles the tip of the tongue all the way down the throat. Heavy. Also had on tap at Gingerman, which had a much stronger hop bitterness.

Cask at GBBF 2009, 4th Aug 09. Gold with a bubbly head. Fruity, hoppy aroma. On the tongue there’s alcoholic warmth as well as a pretty strong hop backbone. Very full bodied - in fact a bit too heavy for my liking.

One pint bottle from my local. Enjoyed at the first beer tasting with conspiring co-workers. A white pillowy head sits on top of this hazy golden pour. Lots of grapefruit in the nose, helloooo hops! The aroma is captivating...anxious anticipation of my first taste. Flavor is exceptionally well balanced between the hops and malt. Citrus and pine hops are not overpowering and allow the sweet malt to reveal itself ever so modestly. I appreciate the long lasting flavors that dance in my mouth...my favorite tasting of the evening by far.

Rating #300 of this brew. Woohoo! I believe this was an extra from BeerBaron420, but might have been from Dogfish120Love. Either way, thanks a bunch. Bottle. Clear orange amber with lotsa bubbles. Nice head to lace. Nose is yeasty with some citrusy sourness in the hops. Taste is big. Yeasty smack finish after big mouthfull. Creaminess to sweet to bitter. Nice brew.

My Bottom Line:
An accomplished Double IPA this is, ripe with citrusy, leafy and resinous alpha goodness, all laid out on a comfortable bed of honeyed malts. Not too pungent, and certainly flavorful throughout, this is exactly the kind of beer I’d like to have in bottles in Quebec. DDC? Trou du Diable? Charlevoix? Anyone?

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A lofty head of foam sticks to the top of the translucent orangey gold.
-The soft effervescence makes for some easy drinking, even though this is not a sessionable brew.
-The hops are minty, fruity, leafy, resinous; a cornucopia of flavor that ends in a levelled resinous bitterness. They make you want to lick your gums (which I dutifully did after every sip, thank you), yet they never overwhelm.
-The malt flavors are not heavy at all; they simply support the hoppy fireworks.
-This is not your most complex Double IPA (the malt flavors are rather straightforward), but it is highly enjoyable. Makes me want to tour California! Which I will, thoroughly, soon...;P

Bottle. Thx Steve!

Bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a pale golden with frothy white head that remains mostly. Aroma is sweet bready malt and heavy citrus, orange and grapefruit. Taste is sweet, with bitter citrus bite. Mouthfeel is crisp with lively carbonation, and is a bit creamy. Pretty nice DIPA.

What A nice brew, thanks to secret Santa 2009! I had an interesting Christmas today, I went nuts with crying babies, jealous brothers, etc. but after dinner of lamb, everything was great, kids playing nice, and me enjoying this fine brew, poured faint Orange, with a dense head. Lots of hops, but not sticky, very drinkable, palate is very nice, nothing mucking it up, very clean, A great beer, some one trade me another! lol, Even better, try it yourself! Great!

500 ml bottle - thanks to goryshkewych for the tasty bonus; slight haze, glowing orange and fluffy white head when poured into my DFH snifter; aromas of bitter fruits, sugary malt, pineapple, stale hops, skunk weed; body is on the thin side with mild resiny mouthfeel; hop profile in the flavors is a little weak; much more fruity than dry in the finish and the sweetness carries over the bitterness; love the nose here though; memory might not be quite right, but the nose and fruitiness reminds me a little of nugget nectar

Courtesy of Joe McPhee. This poured a very clear very amber, with nice white head and good lacing. Nose is very much of floral, greasy, and herbal hops. Mouthfeel is a bit light in body but very smooth. . Flavor is a good blend of malts and hops, with citrus and good bitterness continues all the way to the long bitter finish. A really good beer.
