Pours out a somewhat hazy light copper with what initially starts as a lively well carbonated white head, which quickly fades. Interesting aroma of funky barrel, brown sugar coated apples and some booze. Taste is complex, the alcoholic bite is there the whole way through but doesn’t take away. Apples, some earthy oak notes and alcohol in there also. Very interesting idea for this beer. I’d like to try another bottle of this at some point. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2008 Bottle courtesy of golubj; been looking forward to this one. Poured a copper gold, much paler near the bottom. Very strong aroma; huge amount of apples, alcohol, and oak/wood. Aroma was really over powered by the aging; not too many tripel elements. As others have mentioned, this beer is still extremely hot. The woody presence seemed to reinforce that. Initially, little hint of the underlying beer. Eventually some fruity/banana elements began to emerge, but not too strongly. Apple, alcohol and brandy really dominate the experience. Definitely could use some aging to diminish the hotness, however I am not certain that it would do all that much to improve the overall flavor. Overall it was above average, but just a bit too one dimensional. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 1, 2008 Pours a rich amber color with some bubbly whitish head. Smell was pretty strange and unlike anything I expected. Almost like sulphur, alcohol and/or funkiness in an unpleasant way. Taste wasn’t much better, and the alcohol wasn’t the problem. Just tasted very herbal and strange. Was somewhat unpleasant, but may try again in the future. Rastacouere (5559), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 1/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 30, 2008 Objectively speaking:
A fun experiment which more or less ruined a brilliant tripel even though age might mellow it up.
I like:
Fun madeira-like aspects, almost toffee-like, honeyed and herbal on top of the calvados hot apple profile. This is rather complicated, but not very fresh.
I dislike:
Atrocious appearance: headless and repelling sediments looking like bird excrements. The tripel’s freshness has been lost in the barrel aging. Alcohol presence is exagerated. Very, very sweet, almost candy-like. A sample felt quite enough at this point. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

I just couldn’t quite put my finger on this one. Plenty of sour apple in the taste. Lots of fruity spice and alcohol coming through as well. An alcohol infused sour apple jolly rancher. OldMrCrow (1198), Seattle, Washington, USA

This one gushes clear white foam for a long time after opening, then pours a cloudy straw-gold with a pretty small head considering. Apple-toffee aroma, a notch of cinnamon. Spicy, dry flavor, apple brandy; it’s really hot and alcoholic in flavor as well as feel, burning the tongue, coming off like some sort of strange vodka cocktail. I’m not nearly as impressed as I expected to be. after4ever (2776), Brier, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 27, 2008 750, capped. Thanks, SuzyGreenberg! Murky caramelly amber than actually looks crystal clear from above. Kind of a strange optical effect. Very light white fizz. Caramelly, toffeeish nose. Fizzy, lightish body. Caramel apple mid-palate. Very hot and dry--big boozy bite. Even with the rubbing alcohol finish that makes it like a cocktail, this beer is still powerfully attractive.
