Commercial Description:
This is a truly unique brew, combining some unusual elements to create a powerful, yet flavorful brew. I brewed a similar beer to this one back in 1998, while I was home brewing out in California. Only this time around I decided to age it in bourbon barrels to add a new element to the already rich sensory profile. The combination of dark malt, elderberries and bourbon barrels makes for an interesting tasting experience. This is a sippin’ beer, so sit back by the fire and enjoy.

A 2007 vintage, Batch 2 via 750ml bottle and shared by Stine, pours a near opaque black brew with an average sized brownish head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of dark pitted fruits, a touch of bourbon, vanilla and raisin. Taste is full bodied, average carbonation with multi flavors of berries, raisin, dark pitted fruits, some caramel malt and bourbon. Finish is semi-sweet and bourbony with a light raisin and caramel aftertaste. Nice alcohol warmth in the finish was well noticed.

Batch 2. Big thanks to Stine for sharing this wonderful beer! Black color with a medium head. Strong winey aroma. Some raisin, berry and vanilla as well. Solid roasted malt flavor. The wine turns to an obvious but not quite overbearing bourbon. Lots of vanilla. Tannic. Yum.

This magnum has been lurking in th fridge for sometime now. My Wife had stted to me on a number of occasions...." D$#& it Steve, are you going to drink this or what?!!!?" Well, the other day I realy did a number on my back, I mean try to twist like a pretzel and tear you back to shreds beyond the limits of Advil/Tylenol PM number on your back. For days I suffered walkin uphill bothways to work and back...in a rainstorm. Until I remembered this magnum of healing elixer stashed in the back of the fridge. So to the rating: Pours a dark tea brown with edges of glass the only translucent part when held to light. Thin yet dense head. Strong Bourbony nose with hints of pear and cherries. Thin drippy legs. Plum fruits (eldeberries?) in center of mouthfeel. Body is sthick and full. Very Bourbony with some dark fruity esters and then steeply decends into a wishy wahsy body of darker malts and a very fizzy finish. I finished the magnum and went to bed for 14 hours. The 12% evivdent from start to finish. My back is still F’d.

750ml batch 2 via glougoburp I believe or maybe Puzzl, everyone seems to think this is better than batch 1 but I don’t have any way to compare. Pours dark dark brown with a 1 finger light brown head. Nose is sweet and rich with some bourbon notes and some other nice sweet molasses like notes. Taste is sweet and rich and full of flavor and a nice kick. Yummers.

750ml bottle thanks to kempleton. Shared with zinister and thickerfreakness. Pours black with a tan head and has good lacing. Nose is fruity with bourbon and spices. taste is of bourbon, fruit and wood characteristics. Mouthfeel is medium with carbonation and a warming alcohol feel to it. A complex and very enjoyable brew.

Thanks to MaltOMeal for this bottle! Shared with MaltOMeal and thickfreakness. Poured a dark coffee color with a bubbly tan head that clings to the side of the glass. Aroma is cherries, bourbon and spices. Rich bourbon flavor with a touch of smokeyness. The rich fizzy carbonation is a bit too much however. Very good drinking beer with a nice bourbon flavor. Thanks bill.

Batch 1. Deep mahogany color with a full foam. Beautiful aromatics of caramel, toffee, oak, vanilla and bourbon. In the mouth it’s loaded with malty goodness, chocolate, coffee, fruit, caramel with an intriguing barrel character as well. Very complex and well crafted. This is easily my favorite beer from Captain Lawrence.
