Commercial Description:
This is a truly unique brew, combining some unusual elements to create a powerful, yet flavorful brew. I brewed a similar beer to this one back in 1998, while I was home brewing out in California. Only this time around I decided to age it in bourbon barrels to add a new element to the already rich sensory profile. The combination of dark malt, elderberries and bourbon barrels makes for an interesting tasting experience. This is a sippin’ beer, so sit back by the fire and enjoy.

Bottle courtesy adrian910ss. Pours deep chocolate brown with very thin tan head. Nose is wonderful with chocolate, bourbon, leather, berries. Flavor is eaqually complex, with the bourbon standing out, but not in too dominant a way, because you are definitely able to pick up the chocolate, berry, leather and dried fruit influences. A slight alcohol burn in the earthy finish. Very nicely done.

Thanks to Aaron for this one. Batch 2. Black body with a frothy bubbly head. Aroma is spicy, salty toffee, chocolate, and slight metallic. Flavor is sweet, buttery, chocolate, toffee, caramel, spice. Dry finish. Quite nice.

Tasted at the February Northern California Beer Tasting. This American Strong Ale pours a deep black brown color form the bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is dark fruit and touch of vinegar, caramel, smoke and oak. A medium to full bodied ASA. Malts are fruity and sweet, lots of dark fruit and caramel, some raisins and oak. Hops are earthy. There is a strong tart/sour thing going on here with some vanilla. Hides the alcohol well. Would like to spend a little more time rating this one. Interesting beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

750ml bottle.Batch 1. Damn, I love this brewery. Still haven’t had a beer from them that disappoints. A thick dark brown pour yields a large, creamy and lasting light brown head. Sweet, rich and boozy on the nose. Heavy bourbon barrel presence. Chocolate chip cookies, pine sap, toffee, creme brulee, booze. Malt, hops, barrel in exquisite balance on the tongue. The dark fruit announces is presence on the palate rather than on the nose. More chocolate chip cookie, plenty of resiny hops, spicy alcohol, oily malt. Rich, creamy and full bodied. This is one hell of a beer and I woudl love to taste after about another year or so on it. Thank you very much Ken. Your generosity is amazing!

750, capped. Thanks, Skoi! Batch 1. Definitely one of the bottles that stayed clean. Black with a slim gray rim. Gigantic plummy berry nose, even when it’s still rather cool. Sweet port and chocolate, too. Rich, creamy, oily body. Dense, complex fruits and chocolate on the mid-palate. Mild sweet finish. This is really amazing stuff that just gets milder and mellower as it warms, and never stops being interesting. This is a buy-by-the-case beer...except that none of us can get it anymore. Phooey.

Batch 002
Slightly lighter dark brown than the 001. The aroma is boozy still but a little more pronounced to the bourbon. Soft chocolate and toffee come together well. Soft body with a delectable brown sugar note. Seems to surrender some complexity to achieve a more pleasurable character, but a nice brew. 7 3 6 3 14 = 3.3

Batch 001
Very dark brown with a thick head. Very pretty beer. Boozy, woody nose with molasses accents and burnt raisin notes, and a hint of chocolate chip cookie dough. Boozy and harsh on the tongue, with some chocolate and toffee undertones. Gets woody and very dry in the finish. 7 4 7 4 14 = 3.6

Bottled, thanks jjpm74! Very dark brown, beige creamy head. Oaky nose with an interesting touch of elderflowers. Sweet and softly malty with roasty malt and molasses. Bourbon brings flavour and warnming alcohol. The bitterness is low. Big, yet well balanced, although the sweetness is a bit much. Really good!
