Commercial Description:
This is a truly unique brew, combining some unusual elements to create a powerful, yet flavorful brew. I brewed a similar beer to this one back in 1998, while I was home brewing out in California. Only this time around I decided to age it in bourbon barrels to add a new element to the already rich sensory profile. The combination of dark malt, elderberries and bourbon barrels makes for an interesting tasting experience. This is a sippin’ beer, so sit back by the fire and enjoy.

Trade from Dmac621. Thanks Dave. I shared this at the Lost Abbey Red Poppy release. Very faint sweetness, with a little sour in the mix. Very surprised at the ABV cause there was no hint of alcohol.

Many thanks to my friend Robert of State Line Liquors for providing a 750 of this neat brew at the SSPSL friday afternoon tasting! Pours a nice sized tan head, lasting with nice lacing. Mostly clear, deep brown color with some ruby glints. Nose is lightly sweet malts, some caramel, gentle wood and bourbon, berries with a neat spiceyness. Body is med/full and soft on the palate, lightly oily, gently carbonated. The blend of flavors is very nice, keeping yer attention through the whole glass, of course the aromas are amazing as well. Medium sweet malts, chocolatey, caramelly with a certain grainy property. Lovely lucious dark fruit notes, well placed whisky support, light wood and vanilla notes maybe even some molasses as well. An almost dry, fruity just right whiskyish finish. I,d have to use the word complex with this brew. All the flavors worked so well together. Just a big old sensory overload. Serious props to you Robert!!

Pours a dark brown color into the tulip glass. Small bubbles didnt’ quite create a head on beer, rather hugged the liquid and popped slowly leaving a slither of lacing on the sides of the glass. The scent was almost like a port wine with some caramel and malty notes. A very slick and smooth mouthfeel with flavors of berries, licorice, brown sugar and some raisins. The lack of carbonation adds to the winter warmer sipping experience. A very interesting beer...not at all what I expected. I would recommend this beer.

10 oz sampler fill, Halftime NY. Pours opaque brown with barely any sort of head. Aromas of bourbon, bourbon oak casks, elderberry, booze, caramel, and roasted malt notes. Flavor is different from anything I’ve ever tasted in the beer world. Roasted notes and smoked wood combines with caramelized brown sugar to fight free from the heavy bourbon and malt flavors. All this comes together to then battle the coffee grounds and elderberry infused liquor waiting at the end. Mouthfeel is slick and oily with a strong alcohol presence and full body. This caught me completely off guard but the robust and hearty yet vinous nature of this brew makes it a perfect winter sipper.

Bottle from trade with MaxxDaddy. Dark chestnut brown with a thin layer of khaki head. A lot of oak and bourbon on the nose, very tannic, but some spices and cocoa in there also. Initially a lot of heat and bourbon on the taste, very tannic through to the finish. It seems there is a hefty roast character that’s fighting to get out. A very nice bourbon and oak show that doesn’t go overboard.

2 liter growler from Half Time, NY. Pours a murky, visibly viscous ruby-hued brown with a minimal brown head with large bubbles. The aorma is woody, smokey and strangely vinous, with notes of red grape, dried fruits, bourbon and caramel. The flavour displays the complexity of malt and cask flavours, with vanilla, toasted cedar and oak chips, brown sugar, smoke, booze, pear esters and coffee malt. The balance is minimal, mostly there is a miriad of flavours coming together in a clusterfuck of flavours. The mouthfeel is watery mid-palate and the finish is not so-so-dry and oily, with a sticky quality. The carbonation is soft, allowing the bourbon cask flavours to make an impression uninterupted. The flavour profile though is interesting enough for me to consider this a quality brew that is definitely entertaining and a nice winter sipper.

Bottle. Very dark brown body, foamy tan head. (3+) Alcoholic, woody aroma, sweet fruity malt. Wood grows as it warms. Dry malt flavour, fruit, and vanilla wood barrel notes that are moderate but fairly dominant, sweet malt, light caramel notes. Smooth average to medium palate. Interesting but a bit rough around the edges.

Bottle - Black ruby colour, small head. Whiskey - wood aroma with dark fruits (plums perhaps?) creeping in. Flavour; Oak, Vanilla-toffee with alcoholic finish. Not bad at all.
