Commercial Description:
This is a truly unique brew, combining some unusual elements to create a powerful, yet flavorful brew. I brewed a similar beer to this one back in 1998, while I was home brewing out in California. Only this time around I decided to age it in bourbon barrels to add a new element to the already rich sensory profile. The combination of dark malt, elderberries and bourbon barrels makes for an interesting tasting experience. This is a sippin’ beer, so sit back by the fire and enjoy.

Batch 1 thanks to the man Jabic. Looks almost like a porter and reaks of molasses and fruity goodness. There is a bit of peat in the background of the aroma after all the sweet molasses. Pretty sweet malty finish with a bit too much alochol in there. In the meantime there is an incredible big body backbone with some roasted malt, a tinge of vanilla, and some caramel. As I focus on the flavors here and spend some time with this beer it is getting better with every sip. More comlex and more enjoyable. A bit of cocoa texture and flavor is hitting me now. Pretty delicious and potent.

Dark reddish-brown pour with a medium sized off white head. Alcohol aroma with some nice roasted malts, chocolate and some oak notes. Very complex flavor with bourbon, vanilla, caramel, plum and cherry and some light wine notes. Very tasty beer with the alcohol solidly well hidden under the complexity of the other flavors. Too bad it’s so incredibly expensive or I’d get a buddy to pick up more of it for me.

750ml Bottle (Batch #3): Thanks to enopacm. Aroma of alcohol, oak, roasted malts, light chocolate, slight bourbon, and slight dark ripe fruits. Poured very dark brown in color with a dense, creamy, light brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Not sparkling. Flavor is complex and medium sweet. Tastes of bourbon, cream, vanilla, tobacco, caramel, dark ripe fruit, light alcohol, light tar, and some wine. Medium to full body. Syrupy, sticky, smooth, creamy, texture. Soft to average carbonation. Sweet, bourbon, light alcohol, caramel, tar, and oak finish is sticky. 12%ABV is better hidden in the flavor than in the aroma. Too much bourbon and not enough wood for my taste.

750 ml, batch 3. Dark ruby red-brown pour with a fine khaki colored head. Very malt forward and lots of bourbon. Some dark fruity sweetness and vanilla. Chocolate and some smokiness, definitely smelling the booze. There is a nice berry component, though I don’t know if my nose is trained enough to identify them as "elderberries." Similar flavor, more fruit and chocolate. Alcohol is integrated nicely - same with the woodiness and the bourbon and vanilla qualities. Slightly spicy, especially in the finish. Bitter, smoky finish. Very nice.

Batch 1 Thanks to whomever shared this at the sexual chocolate release. Dark garnet pour with fluffy beige head and some spotty lace. Aroma was slightly oxidized, but it did not carry over into the flavor. Toasty flavor with notables hints of fruits, oak, and bourbon. Dry finish

Style and Glass: American Strong; Trappist, Snifter ABV, Volume & Calories: 12 % in 25.4 fl oz. estimated at 400 C Purchased at: Joe Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $14.49 Aroma: Very much the impression of bourbon or whiskey. Alcohol, smoke, and fire await. Like a fireplace going in the neighborhood on a cold winter night. Visuals: Very nice packaging, tasteful, inviting. Thin white head hangs on indefinitely, over a dark black oily body. Lacing is intricate and sticky. Taste: Like cough syrup — it’ll cure what ails you. Thick, sugary, with a surprising control of the 12% ABV. Warms immediately. Woody, oaky, and smoky. More of a smoked german sausage than italian or polish spicyness. Like biting into a cupcake — very thick. Tasty! Cherry, chocolate, and caramel. Palate: Warming throughout. Starts thick and dull, no crispness throughout, and not really looking for it. Middle is spongy and drying, and finishes long, smoky, and a little spicy. Overall: Like other CL’s I’ve tried, this is very much about the smoke, and like others I’ve tried, CL seems to do it right — not like eating a sausage, but it would compliment it very well. Delicious, expertly balanced, and neither cloying nor overpowering, which is astounding considering the ABV. originally posted at: <a href="http://beercritic.wordpress.com/"&

Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured dark ruby color with a moderate frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Heavy toasted malt, woody and raisin with a small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.
