Commercial Description:
One of the first beers I brewed after moving out to California to begin my brewing education was a Pale Ale. This version is a true testament to the influences the Wild West had on my early brewing. My Pale Ale is loaded with US-grown Cascade, Crystal, and Columbus hops, so be sure to take a good sniff to enjoy their robust aromas before taking your first sip. Sensory Profile: An aromatic beer with notes of citrus, pine, a noticeable bitterness, and a touch of malty backbone to help balance it out. Food Pairing: Foods with a spicy kick are a great match, as the bitterness of the hops will help to cool the palate before your next bite. Mexican food and pizza are natural matches.

On tap at an upper west side NYC bar. Nice pale ale with plenty of sweet malt to balance out the hops. If I lived in New YHork I would be purchasing CL all the time. Having said that I’m quite happy to have Surly.

Draft @ HDG. A very well balanced pale ale. Nice and hoppy with the right mix of grains to balance it out. Can this guy brew, or what?

Clear amber. Aroma is like the IIPA with pine, citrus, grapefruit and a typical caramel backing. Medium bodied, lightly bitter finish. For an APA this was great.

Gold, thin white head. Nose is caramel, piney hops, very light caramel, some fruit. Flavor is grass & pine, caramel, a bit of cheese. Some meladonins come through in the finish with brown sugar & pine.

from gravity keg at the blind tiger, NYC. short thin creamy off white head. cloudy butterscotch golden color, amber at the edges. earthy pale malt and pine hops aroma. sweat too. flavor is smooth earthy pale malt then hoppy pine cone bitterness for good measure. mouthfeel is slick, low but lively carbonation. a bit of caramel malt in the finish, hoppy aftertaste.

After a long car ride up to the brewery this was the first beer I tried - Nice golden amber with a refreshing aroma of light pine and citrus plus malty sweetness. Taste had a smooth malt backing to go with a pleasant hop flavor of citrus, grass, and pine. Everything an APA should be.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a moslty clear light gold with a fluffy shiny white head and good retentiion- some lace as well. Citrusy and orange hints, with some light pine, grass, and light metallicy cascade aroma. Lightly bready malt profile with a nice light pine and citrus hop character and a clean pleasant bitterness. Easy drinking well made APA.

My Bottom Line:
The spicy, fruity hoppiness of this American Pale Ale is intricately linked to the malt’s cereal sweetness which whips up a lusciously smooth body.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-Some lacing is drawn atop the clear copper hues.
-The herbal, wooden hop notes complexity to the hop profile.
-Maltiness offers few flavors, but that body sustains ever so well.
-The lenient bitterness can still be trusted to actively participate in the overall very drinkable experience.

On tap at Tap NY.
