Commercial Description:
I am big fan of bourbon. It is one of the only true American distillated, and has a long rich history to go with it. Many people don’t know that by law, for a whiskey to be called bourbon, it must be aged in brand new, charred American oak barrels. So once that bourbon is dumped from the barrel for bottling that barrel can no longer be used to make bourbon and is of no more use to the distiller. That’s were we come in. We acquired freshly emptied bourbon barrels to age our Smoked Porter in, and it was worth the extra effort. We present to you the perfect marriage of beer, bourbon and oak for you to enjoy.

Okay, I don’t know how to rate this one. I gave aroma, appearance, flavor and palate good scores. But overall I gave it a 1. THIS IS NOT A BB AGED SMOKED PORTER!!! There is that sour funk of brett that is all over this beer. The funk of it covers up any trace of what it should be. I think they have an infection that they don’t know how to control, probably from Cuvee de Castleton. Having said that, it was a great beer. I very much enjoyed it. I just don’t like being duped. I got this in a trade and probably would have asked for a diffeent beer if I had known what I was iin for...

Bottled. A black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet and acidic with notes of roasted malt, brettanomyces, alcohol, and wood as well as a light smoke note. The flavor is sweet and acidic with notes of roasted malt, citrus, and wood, as well as light notes of chocolate and alcohol, leading to a dry and tart finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Thanks to ajm for tracking down a bottle of this. After our experience with the rum barrel, I was really hoping for some CL redemption, but this just made me angry. Either the barrels are terrible or (more likely) the base beer can’t hold up to barrel aging and this is all part of a clever marketing scheme. Pours fine once the obnoxious carbonation subsides -- roasted brown with a mocha head. Smells and tastes of vinegar, oak, and distant vanilla bean. Not even close to the "perfect marriage" noted in the description -- much closer to divorce court.

From bottle, blind #12. Pours dark brown to black with a slowly collapsing tan head. Dry fruity, berry, lacto and roasted aroma. Smooth fruity, light sulphorish and crisp acidity and citrusy base flavoured. Smooth sulphorish berry fruity flavoured into the far finish alongside a touch of bourbon. Nice, subtle and utterly well balanced.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of bu11zeye. Pours an opaque dark brown with a dense light brown head. Lightly tart aroma of wood and bourbon. Medium body, lightly tart woody accents, hard roasted malts, a little bourbon and vanilla. Dry and lightly acidic finish. Yummy. 120609

Bottle from JB175 in trade. Batch 1. Thanks Jason! Long lead up to this and boy was it bad. Nose is sour like a Flemish. Flavor was of very light, tart bourbon and off-tasting ale, certainly not of porter. Finally figured out it was not helped my massive over-carbonation, so I put it in a shaker to relieve that. Got smoother, but was still tart wood and no roast. This was supposed to be a barrel-aged porter? Come on, CL, get your head in the game...

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering thanks to Rich who brought it and some other CL goodies when he and some of the CL crew showed up later in the evening. Pours a hazy dark brown with a thin tan head. Smoke, bourbon, and vanilla on the nose. Medium bodied with a light hint of brett funk. Nice crisp roast finish.
