Commercial Description:
I am big fan of bourbon. It is one of the only true American distillated, and has a long rich history to go with it. Many people don’t know that by law, for a whiskey to be called bourbon, it must be aged in brand new, charred American oak barrels. So once that bourbon is dumped from the barrel for bottling that barrel can no longer be used to make bourbon and is of no more use to the distiller. That’s were we come in. We acquired freshly emptied bourbon barrels to age our Smoked Porter in, and it was worth the extra effort. We present to you the perfect marriage of beer, bourbon and oak for you to enjoy.

Pours darkest brown with a minimal head. Super sour and smoky aroma with some coffee and sweetness. Flavor is incredibly sour and not much else. Not terribly pleasant.

Bottle courtesy my buddy Joe. Pours a reddish black coca cola color with a thick tan head. Bourbon, sweet malt, candy, and a hint of smokiness in the aroma. Thick sweet fruity fruity taste, sweet vanilla and smoke with a little sourness thrown in for good measure. Really an outstanding beverage.

Bottle shared at Otown December Tasting by dchmela. Thanks Dave! Dark brown pour, thin tan head. Aroma of vanilla and cherries. Flavor was VERY much bourbon, sour cherries, and a hint of vanilla.

Pours dark brown in color with a nice inch of tan head. Smell is sour. A porter that is bourbon barrel aged that smells sour. Sure enough even more sour notes in the taste. There are very faint bourbon oak and vanilla notes in the taste. Not what I was expecting but still Im enjoying it quite a bit. Decent mouthfeel. This is a weird animal but Im digging it. Now the question is was the sour notes by design or by accident.

Thanks to Theo for this brew. Pours dark brown with a thin beige head. Much like the wine barrel this had a lot of sour lactic character. The sour mild acidic quality really brought out the sweetness of the bourbon, delicious vanilla and caramel notes blend with the chocolate flavor from the porter. The palate thins up from the souring, but very nice brew.

What a treat this was. Bought 2 750mL’s off a friend who was able to make the release date at the brewery, thanks Steve! The pour produces a puffy tan head above an opaque near-black body, leaving spotty lacing. The nose is odd and complex, yet appetizing. Strong impressions of vanilla, oak and bourbon with loads of vinous malts, suggestions of cherries and some mild lactic funk. In the flavour, intensely chocolaty malts and smoke add the repertoire of flavours, previously present in the aroma. The palate is almost silken, sharply carbonated and full, with a long, smokey oak finish. You couldn’t ask for a more intense and complex porter (aside from their wine barrel offering).

Batch 1 bottle from CaptainCougar, shared with ilovedarkbeer. Pours with a very large, light brown head that leaves great lacing as it falls over the black body. Aroma of brett, slight cherries, some chocolate, bourbon, smoke and a bit floral. Taste is fruity, smokey and bretty/earthy, with vanilla, chocolate covered cherries, and oak char. Light bubbles and a creamy mouthfeel. Very nice...
