BBB63 (3667), La Porte, Indiana, USA May 5, 2008 750ml bottle from Brent and enjoyed in my Expedition snifter: Deep brown with reddish highlights topped by a fizzy fading head and spotty lace. Wow, I did not expect this much sour character in this beer. Noted sour cherry, oak, smoked malt, chocolate, light bourbon, walnut, prune and red grape, and a musty yeast ester.
The taste follows suit with a sweet and sour combination of cheery and grape over a layer of roasted and chocolaty malts. I do detect some bourbon and oak but not nearly as strong as I would have thought initially. This is developing into a big sour brown if you ask me... on purpose, not to sure, but Mikey Likey this flavor profile a lot! Some light handed smoke and nutty notes upon the finish. The mouth feel is sprite and refreshing with a light astringent finish. Well, I like this but really for all the reasons I did not expect. If you expect a robust malty beer then look somewhere else.
hellbilly (732), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jun 19, 2008 sampled with the phoenix crew. provided by sparky27... this has the same basic smoked porter characteristics in the aroma as the other two but they are rather muted by the unmistakable aroma of bourbon, oak and vanilla sweetness. the flavor is also dominated by the bourbon, oak and vanilla but in a good way... it’s really well integrated with the dark fruit, brown sugar, cocoa and smoke. sourness remains in the finish. medium body but it has an insanely smooth and velvety mouth feel. the best of the three, actually... Rciesla (674), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Jun 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a big tan head. Aroma is bourbon, dark fruit, plum fig prunes. Some smoke from the porter seeps through with some sweet maltiness. Not my favorite bourbon barrel but an awesome bourbon porter none the less. Jonpol (1231), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Jun 8, 2008 07 Vintage Batch #1. Pours burgundy with an explosive head that lingers for a bit. Good lacing. Aromas of dark fruit like plumb and nectarine. Medium nectar with high carbonation. Big ole fluffy plume of froth on the palate. Flavor wise this is a little disappointing. Theres a mild acidic souring upfront with moderate booze essence. Stew up some dates, figs, plumbs, nectarines, peaches and apricot and reduce it to a sludge. Then add some lemon juice and a shot of Bookers. Squeeze the juice out and here you have it. And although the abv says 6.4%, I tell you it’s way off. More like 9. There a little funk to it. The finish lingers with booze and acidity with a bit of cocoa. I never would have guessed this to be a porter. Bockyhorsey (1878), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 4, 2008 Sampled at Hellbilly’s Hellraiser II. Wood an bourbon for aroma. Brown body. Flavor of oak wook like I just ren into an oak tree and bit it. Sweet caramel presence along with a dry roasted malt finish. Good brew. SuperDave70 (577), Arizona, USA Jun 2, 2008 Sampled at hellbilly’s hellraiser II, along with the wine and rum varieties. Lots of sweet caramel, bourbon, smoke and vanilla in the aroma. Some roasty malt and sourness in the flavor, along with everything else. Some sourness really comes through on the finish. My favorite of the three.
