Commercial Description:
Rum barrels are a new one for me. I’ve never tasted a beer that was aged in rum barrels before I tasted the same beer you have in your hands. And let me tell you, it was no easy task tracking down freshly emptied rum barrels and getting them up to the brewery. But I think you will agree it was worth the extra effort. To create this beer we took our Smoked Porter and let it slowly age in barrels that once held 12 year old Virgin Island rum. Straight form the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

Pours a dark brown color with a thin light brown head. The aroma is sweet and has mild alcohol and licorice. Flavor of wood, licorice, mild alcohol with lingering sweetness. The body is light with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation.

Thanks to JohnC for sharing this one. Brown pour, tan head. Sweet, woody with a slightly sour tinge. Medium mouthfeel, balance is ok but overall this one falls a bit short & the tartness is somewhat distracting.

Batch 1 Bottle from JB175. Thanks Jason! Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Nose is very sweet and rummy with some wood, and barely noticeable roasted malts. Flavor is equally dominated by the rum (even more so than the bourbon barrel SFTO) and leaves me wondering what the actual CL smoked porter tastes like. Didn’t get any of the brett/tartness people talk about in their reviews.

dark brown pour with an off white head, tasted with elnadeau & chilihead. The flavor was kind of tart/vinuous. It could use a more aging.

eaglefan helped me drink and clean up this one, thanks Brian! A steady stream of foam after popping the top, gotta wipe up the over flow for awhile. Large, fizzy tan head that sticks around for a short while. Murky brown colored brew with some red edging. Nose of light rum, alc., some wood, raisins, vanilla and chocolate. Body is medium and the carbonation level not as strong as i thought it would be, rather creamy, surprisingly. Rummy flavors with a faint chocolate and roast notes, nicely woody, pencil shavings, cedary with some spicey notes as well. A little sweeter than the BB version. Light funkiness also. Lightly sweet, fruity and gently boozy finish. Props to jjpm74 for the bottle. Thanks John!

Batch 1 bottle from Slob, courtesy there to for jjpm74, who hooked him up. Opening the bottle began the excitement, full fledged gusher, volcanic flow of foam up and out of the bottle even after making a mess of the counter and pouring off two small tasting glasses of head (which led us to enjoy the rum-bourbon versions blended, hehe.... a nice mix for sure). As you can guess, the appearance was porter like with a big pillowy foamy head, well sustained, highly carbonated mouthfeel, airy even, man, more bret in this one? Wonderful in that case! The aroma was more dark fruity (plums and raisins) than the bourbon version, some rum, bret, some chocolate, chainsaw dust smoke, more malty and flavorful than the bourbon version, yet still not overrun with booz/rum, short of sticky, but sweeter and with more character. Nice character in this beer, and again totally fun and enjoyable. Thanks, Bert and John, a great start to the Christmas Holiday season!

750 ml bottle shared with Padrefan98. Batch 1. Dark pour with good sized head. Lots of Dark fruit, coffee, wood. Sweet flavors of rum and more dark fruit. Hints of tartness too. Finishes with roasted bitter chocolate. Tartness in the aromas was mostly absent in the flavor.

What a huge gushing mess! Mike didn’t think it was all that funny but I got a bit of a chuckle out of it. Shit was all over the place.
Dark brown with a light brown or tan head.
Lots of brett aroma and mostly just citrus and wood character.
Lots of bacteria and wild yeast character with a long alcoholic finish.
Medium to light body. High carbonation. Super dry finish.
It really comes off as any other barrel aged and brett infused beer out there. I really wish some of the porter character was still there.
