Commercial Description:
Rum barrels are a new one for me. I’ve never tasted a beer that was aged in rum barrels before I tasted the same beer you have in your hands. And let me tell you, it was no easy task tracking down freshly emptied rum barrels and getting them up to the brewery. But I think you will agree it was worth the extra effort. To create this beer we took our Smoked Porter and let it slowly age in barrels that once held 12 year old Virgin Island rum. Straight form the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

750ml bottle-pours a retaining creamy tan head and black color. Aroma is medium/dark malt-licorice/chocolate, rum, acidic, oak. Taste is very sweet medium/dark malt-licorice/chocolate, rum, acidic, oak, dark fruit-sweet. Not my style. Occasional. OK carbonation.

Tasted at Patron Saints Angel Share Release. Bottle from deftim13. Tried with deftim13, brewboy1, Captaincougar, and others. JohnC, miketd, and WeeHeavy were here earlier, but left by this time. Small bubble tan head. Dark brown liquid. A little funk aroma that was told shouldn’t be there. Very little sour in the taste.

shared by Joey ( Iowaherkeye ). I did not make a note of this one being a gusher as Eric mentioned, my notes say the Eisenbahn Lust was the one to foam all over the table. anyway, I don’t think a smoked porter should be sour, certainly not as sour as this. looked fine with a medium brown pour with a big fizzy head. some aroma of chocolate and earthy wood, but everything was overshadowed by the sour funk. some say you should not rate an infected beer, but if the product is inconsistent, shouldn’t people be made aware of the fact?

Thanks to JB175 for the bottle. Dark brown with a small beige head. Nose of rum, bretty, sweet fruits and a bit of woodiness. Flavor is nutty and sour with rum. Some nice malts too. Medium bodied good mouthfeel.

Shared at miketd’s tasting

Both the rum and bourbon versions were opened. Since I was temporarily bourboned out (with a few more barrel aged beers to try) I decided to pass on that in favor of the more unique rum aged one. Someone described it perfectly when they summarized it as ’Bacardi laced beer’. Hopefully I can try the other versions to compare.

Aroma / Appearance - Bacardi, ginger bread and coffee create one of the weirdest combinations I’ve come across to date. Brett is strong without overwhelming anything else as it imparts a slight sourness underneath everything. The rum is more dominant than the beer by a noticable margin. The pour resulted in a thin tannish head. This rested above the medium black body expected from a porter.

Flavor / Palate - Black olives soaked in bretty beer was definitely something I was not expecting. A dry woodiness plays against the rum. The closest thing I’ve had to this is the brett version of the Gonzo Porter. It was enjoyable but I don’t think I would actively try to track this down again.Shared at miketd’s tasting

Thanks for sharing, iowaherkeye. The bottle was a gusher. The body was black with a light brown head. The aroma was a little bit of brett with some cinnamon and cherries. The taste had some smoked malt alons with a light hint of brett. There was some burnt pancakes and almonds. Interesting.

Shared by Sliffy. Aroma with a slight bit of rum and roasted malts. Interesting color--very dark brown with some almost purple hints. Medium to full mouthfeel. Oak flavors dominate with definite rum flavors (vanilla, banana?, spices). Roasted taste to all of the above.

Courtesy of Degarth. It pours a dark color with amber edges and tall mocha head. The aroma is red wine like, oakiness, booze and behind that is sweet malts, vanilla, burnt malts and faint caramelization. The flavor is oak and booze backed up by roasty and burnt malts. I also get red wine fruit and tartness. It seems to lack balance.
