Commercial Description:
Rum barrels are a new one for me. I’ve never tasted a beer that was aged in rum barrels before I tasted the same beer you have in your hands. And let me tell you, it was no easy task tracking down freshly emptied rum barrels and getting them up to the brewery. But I think you will agree it was worth the extra effort. To create this beer we took our Smoked Porter and let it slowly age in barrels that once held 12 year old Virgin Island rum. Straight form the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

Bottle from tprokop7. Thanks! Pours dark brown with light beige head. Smell is rum like with a touch of alcohol and perhaps light roastiness. Taste is roasty and rum like with a cane sugar sweetness. Comes off a bit sweet overall after a glass, but it is pretty enjoyable, and the smoke is either very faint or not noticeable in this one. Nice beer.

Many thanks to ajm for splitting this with me. Unfortunately, I have to agree with him that the base porter in this case just doesn’t hold up to the harshness of the barrel, which seems to masque the smoke entirely. Loaded with alcohol and dark fruit on the nose which carries into the flavor along with a note of wood. I was really looking forward to this one and it fell well short of expectations. Can’t wait to check out the others to compare the effect of the barrels.

Very deep brown in colour with a very long lasting large beige head, excellent lacing. The aroma is roasty with some alcohol, a high sweetness, some chocolate malts and smoke, woody. The flavour is of rum, alcohol, chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits with just a hint of sourness. Alcoholic mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes long, hot and bitter.

The rum comes through quite a bit in this and its seems way higher in alcohol then it actually is.

750ml bottle.
Opened on December 11, 2008.
Batch #3.

Bottle from trade with JB175 - thanks Jason! A unique specimen indeed. Nose is a nice rum/wood combo that implies tart fruit. Body is a simple brown-gray. Flavor threw me for a loop as it is almost textbook Flemish sour. Didn’t realize rum barrels would get this tart, but ultimately makes sense. Tastes as if explicitly flavored with tart cherries. Smoke survives, but barely. I don’t think the base beer is tough enough for aging, really.

Bottle thanks to dchemela. Thanks, Dave! Nearly black pour with lovely off-white, pink-brown-tinted foamy head with good retention. Some sour fruity slightly woody notes on the aroma. Seems like it would be tangy, but the taste is more sweet and well-rounded. Slight smoke, slight wood, but nothing too crazy. Very solid.

My bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- c/o the 1st Annual Canadian Festivus. Pours a very dark brown with an average size diminishing foamy light-brown head. Aroma’s slightly vinuous with some funkyness, citrus, sweet malt, chocolate, rum and wood. Flavour of wood, sweet malt, light funk, hints of chocolate and smoke with a citrusy finish. Dry mouthfeel, average bodied. Pretty good.

750ml bottle from NYbeer, thanks Steven, shared with DuffManSW. Very dark beer with a tan head. Sweet spice aroma, allspice or cinnamon maybe a little rum as well. Sweet. slight bitterness with a dry finish. Some bitter chocolate as well, very good. Another good one missed by mspindler.

2009-02-19. Very dark brown body with a good sized khaki head. (3+) Modestly alcoholic aroma, dusty malt, light sour tang. (6+) Flavour is similar with dry alcohol, light sour tang, mild malt. Rum makes occasional overt appearances at times which are distracting. Average palate is very carbonated. Okay but not something I would be in a hurry to return to. Bottle shared by HogTownHarry
