Commercial Description:
Rum barrels are a new one for me. I’ve never tasted a beer that was aged in rum barrels before I tasted the same beer you have in your hands. And let me tell you, it was no easy task tracking down freshly emptied rum barrels and getting them up to the brewery. But I think you will agree it was worth the extra effort. To create this beer we took our Smoked Porter and let it slowly age in barrels that once held 12 year old Virgin Island rum. Straight form the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

Thanks to Jeff for this bottle. Cap pops off, then starts gushing a bit. Pours out dark brown with a medium hued large tan head. Aroma of oak, rum, alcohol and molasses. Taste is complex, sugary molasses of the rum is hiding in the background, smoky/roasted malts come through slight dried fruit, with a slightly alcohol/oak/earthy rum finish. Being both a big rum lover and beer lover, this was a very good marriage of two great things.

Big thanks to the BA who sent me this. Pours extremely dark brown, lasting head. Rum is quite apparent on the nose, some coffe and chocolate as well. Faint smoke. Flavor is complex, the rum doesn’t dominate but serves to compliment the rest. A nice chocolatey flavor, with a bit more smoke on the palate than the nose would suggest, and a slight roastiness. A clean woodiness comes through. As it warms, the rum starts to rear its head. Medium bodied, but very coating mouthfeel. Great job by Scott Vacaro with this one, the barrel doesn’t overpower the beer, yet the barrel makes its presence well known.

Batch 2. Bottle. Even opened in a big room the rum scent pours from the glass. You don’t have to raise the glass to get the big scent. Aroma is all rum. Dark brown with a light but lasting head. Smooth. Tastes like a rum-beer hybrid. Turns it almost Chimay-like. Alcohol burst and then big smoke finish.

Bottle. Body-nearly opaque with a thick ring of bubbles and medium film of bubbles. Nose-buttery, candy, light funk, lots of nose from the barrel, light rum. Taste-light coffee, bitter, alcohol on the backend, light rum, medium to high CO2, cola, rum comes out as it warms, watered down Sprite, soda water, watermelon, fig, raisin, very well done.

Poured dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of rum, fruit, and sweet malt. Good sweet flavor with some rum hints. Fruit and spice in the finish.

Bomber. Aroma is remarkably the essence of rum and dark liquer, with some light grass and toasted malt. Palate is very creamy, almost buttery in its smoothness. Carbonation is definitely second fiddle here. Flavor starts with molasses and brown sugar, dark flavors that are robust and distinct. Mid-palate contributes roasts, rum, and dark chocolate. Finish is where this beer really shines: the sweet malt, roasts, and slight smoked meat are complexified by a funk that is really appealing to me. God, overall there is so much going on here . . . I started getting everything and the kitchen sink, such as green apple funk and teriyaki meat. Wow, love this, good job CL.

Entered as my USA rating number 1700. Bottled. A black beer with a brown shine under a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of rum, prunes, plums, and roasted malt. The flavor is very sweet with notes of roasted malt, rum, prunes, and plums, combined with a note of alcohol that tickles the tongue, before a dry woody and alcoholic finish sets in. Thanks a lot Papsoe for sharing this gem.
