Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Courtesy someone @ RBSG and, later, TheCheeseMan. Chestnut brown color, light tan head. Great aroma - oak, wine, licorice, tobacco, light smoke, very light roast. The wine and light roast really go together well. The taste has more red wine character along with some roast, but the porter characters are under the oak and wine. Love the aroma on this one.

RBSG 2008. Interesting beer that picked up a lot of character from the wine barrels, very sour and tanic, good amount of funk that builds grape tartness. I’m not sure it blended all that well with the original beer, the smokiness didn’t work well with the sourness for me, this turned into almost a sour brown.

Bottle courtesy of thecheeseman. Pours black with tan head. Sour aroma with vanilla, oak and smoke. Flavors of oak, smoke, vanilla and funky sourness. The aging in the wine barrel really adds a nice touch of wine to the taste. Very nice.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a tan head. Malt, light oak, light smoke aroma. Tart wine flavor with light malt. Medium body. The tartness and wine linger with light smoke and good malt. Tries hard.

[1464-20080531] 1pt9.4floz bottle. Bit of fruity raisin and smoky roast aroma. Dark dark brown body with a foamy light tan head. Dark roast and dark smoky malt flavour has a bit of a sour background. Medium body. Nice smoke accent. (6/3/8/4/15) 3.6
(Post-Mondial Tasting)

[2006B-20090219] Bottle. Sweet yeasty fruit cake aroma with heavy thick molasses. Hazy, dark red brown body with a long-lasting creamy light tan head. Long sour malt flavour initially followed by a sweet kick, smoke throughout and some wine characteristics that are red and full. Medium-full body. Interesting. (6/4/8/3/15)

Courtesy of tpd975. The pour is dark dark brown with thin mocha head. The aroma is big and brash with big funk barrel notes, red wine fruitiness, light dark fruitiness, fresh cut oak planks and red wine tannins. At the end of the draw there’s some roastiness and burnt malts. The taste starts red wine and sherry-ish sweet and then quickly becomes tart and tannin like. Midway and to the finish the tartness dwindles enough to allow some roastiness to show through while mild funky barrelness and oak notes make an appearance.

Bottle. A almost black beer with a big brown head. A wery alive beer, explosive, maybe infected, others around the table think it´s ok, I don´t know if it´s soppose to be sour, maybe bret? there is also wood and horseblanket notes in there. Medium body with a sparkeling dry acid finish.
