Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Tasted from bottle at RBSG, plus I have a bottle in my closet. I guess that’s up for trade now, preferrably to a local. Big frothy head. Black. Very dry. I’m not a big fan of the smoke from the oak series, because I prefer sweet beers. It’s still a treat to try the best of the three.

Very interesting beer. It was like a volcanic explosion when I opened it; lot of foam all over. The beer pours a nice ruby/brown/black, with incredible light brown foam. The aroma jumps right out at you, a strong aroma of dry wine and oak. After, you pick up a slight smokiness from the beer itself. the flavor was amazing. Definitely had the characteristics of a porter, roasted malts and all, but also had the sour quality of a very dry Cabernet or Pinot Noir. The oak makes itself known in the flavor as well, a nice compliment to the beer. The finish has a lot going on as well. First and foremost, the finish is a LOT like a Cabernet, with the sour taste on the palate. After that, the smoke flavor lingers on the palate, a nice thing to finish with. The beer has a medium mouthfeel. Very intersting and innovative beermaking. This one is off the beaten path, and I really enjoyed this one.

Mother-fucking beer. Exploded everywhere like a fucking enema gone wrong. Aroma is sour, bretty, lactic, some porter essence, smoke, sweet. Fantastic aroma. Taste is initially sour and fruity, more lactic sour, dark malts, smokiness. Wow. This beer is complex as hell and yummy. Why the fuck did it bukkake all over the table and make me suck it up like a whore over a pile of coke?

Bottle @ Dutch Ratebeer Session. Aroma has malts, perhaps even some peat, fruitiness. Dark coloured with a beige head. Taste is bit sour, winey. Taste is better than the bourbon barrel, but it doesn’t have the good aroma of the bourbon barrel.

750ml bottle. Thar’ she blows! This was a gusher! Lost quite a bit of brew to foam forcing it’s way out of the bottle. This poured a dark brown-to-black with a huge tan head which lingered and produced great lacing. nose was of vinous fruit, oak and some vinegar. Taste was of smoke and sour fruit with a hint f coffee. Mouthfeel was medium-to-thin and was sour and dry. i’m not a fan of sour brews, but got to liking this more as it went along.

#31 Bottle [Sk8viking great American blind tasting] Average beige creamy like head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of sour malt, vinegar, light fruit. Over the palate came mild wood. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor with a hint of bitter and sour notes. Light sour malty finish. 7 / 3 / 7 / 3 / 12 = 3.2
