Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Bottle @ Dutch Ratebeer Session. Aroma has malts, perhaps even some peat, fruitiness. Dark coloured with a beige head. Taste is bit sour, winey. Taste is better than the bourbon barrel, but it doesn’t have the good aroma of the bourbon barrel.

750ml bottle. Thar’ she blows! This was a gusher! Lost quite a bit of brew to foam forcing it’s way out of the bottle. This poured a dark brown-to-black with a huge tan head which lingered and produced great lacing. nose was of vinous fruit, oak and some vinegar. Taste was of smoke and sour fruit with a hint f coffee. Mouthfeel was medium-to-thin and was sour and dry. i’m not a fan of sour brews, but got to liking this more as it went along.

#31 Bottle [Sk8viking great American blind tasting] Average beige creamy like head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of sour malt, vinegar, light fruit. Over the palate came mild wood. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor with a hint of bitter and sour notes. Light sour malty finish. 7 / 3 / 7 / 3 / 12 = 3.2

Bottle from Dickinsonbeer, tasted at DTS in Bunnik. Batch #2. Reddish brown color. Grapes and a hint of vanilla in the aroma. Mustard and a hint of peat. Vinous flavor, smoky with licorice, mint and oak. Fairly complex. Different flavors follow eachother in a rapid speed. Hints of brett and leather. Complex and likeable.

Dutch tasting session Bunnik. Bottled. Opaque, brown head. Fruity nose, balsamic vinegar. Fruity flavour, way more balanced than the bourbon version; in this beer the sourness actually fits.
