Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

750ml bottle (batch 2).....an explosive pour for sure and i wish i listened to all the disclaimers instead of just opening it without a glass or sink around. anywho, the pour is dark and almost black. the huge light brown head took a few minutes to settle after the gush.... a solid aroma of red wine, vinous qualities, cherries, sour oak and light shades of chocolate.....wine, cherries, oak, dusty chocolate, and a little smoke make up most of the flavors. a pretty dry finish left me wanting a little more. silky smooth mouthfeel makes this a whole lot better.

RateBeer Rating, Style and Glass: 98, Porter, English Pint, Stem Glass ABV, Volume & Calories: 6.4% in 25.4 fl oz. estimated at 340C Purchased at: OakTree Buy Rite in South Plainsfield, NJ for $14.99 (special thanks to Jay for this back store grab.) Aroma: wine, oak, age, extraordinary, overwhelming, pungent. 10 out of 10. Visuals: fully opaque, black, thin wispy tan head, strong lacing. 5 out of 5. Taste: grapes, oak, electric, sauerkraut, wet, burnt, pine, cherry, beautifully crafted. 9 out of 10. Palate: surf, mercury, long, strong, bitter, sour. 5 out of 5. Overall: Reminds me of the smell of a house burning. I wouldn’t seek it out again - smoked is not my favorite style, though I’m glad I had a chance to sample it. It’s extremely well crafted, and in my palate, it’s extremely close to wine. 17 out of 20.

750 Batch 2 somewhat of a gusher but after the first pour it settled a bit. Aquired via trade thanks Beerexchange and Puzzl for bottles. Both of you rock. Shared with Cyn and bikesanbeer. Pours black with a 1 finger light brown head. Nose is interesting, certainly full of malts and a bit of smoke. Also a bit of coffee and chocolate in there too. Taste is sweet, malty, smokey with a really nice wine like character. This is a trip it makes me think of Allagash Interlude but it’s a porter. Gotta say I like this a lot, I have 2 of the other versions but this is the first one I’ve opened. This is so weird but so good, can’t wait to see if the boozy ones have similar characteristics. Another great beer from CL.

22 fl oz bottle, thanks to Papsoe. Pours dark brown to black with a lacing light brown and creamy head. Extremely fruity and with smooth acidic notes from the bret and barrel. Light roasted malt note too. Flavour starts citric but soon goes into a nice roasted malt flavour before a nice dry and mild woody note appears. Smooth roasted and fruity finish with a light brett note along.8-4-9-5-17=4.3

From bottle #31 at sk8vikings American blind tasting. Pours dark brown to black with a collapsing tan head. Smoked and roasted malt aroma. Light acidic too. Flavour is acidic and mild smoked. Smooth roasted and acidic. Nice blend. Lingering orange fruity acidic and woody dry. Solid citric finish.7-4-7-3-15=3.6

Bottled. A very dark brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet wtih notes of wine, herbs, grapes, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of wine, as well as notes of wood, roasted malt, and a light tart brettanomyces note, almost giving it a flavor of a lambic, leading to a very dry woody finish where the note of wine carries thru. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottled (Thx Papsoe for sharing). Dark reddish brown coloured. Dense brown head. Sweetness, light smoke, light berries and light spice in the aroma. Has a vague sourness. Flavour of vanilla, wood, berries, herbs and light smoke. Balanced and smooth. Medium to full bodied. Wood, light grape, oak and sweetness in the end. This is a treat indeed.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of BrianK. Pours an almost opaque black with a vague tint of orange and a dense, creamy beige head. Tart aroma of Brett with lots of pleasant woody accents. Medium body, some burned malt but in a subdued fashion. Again wood and a lightly sour astringent Brett. Light and dry finish. Very refreshing and highly drinkable due to the low ABV. 250608 and 260708
