Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Sample at GABF 2009. Pours a dark cola brown with thin tan head. Aroma is sour with notes of red wine, fresh berries, light vinegar, muted chocolate and coffee with an earthiness. Flavor is malty and lightly sour with notes of fresh berries, smoke, chocolate, light barnyard funk and caramel. Medium body with a pleasing finish.

[Rating 1200!!!] Bottle... Poured deep brown, with a bubbly, light brown head. Rich, roasted malt with berry fruit aroma. Mild warmth to the darkness of the beer, but an overall light, and on the fizzy side palate. Lots of malt with a dark fruit and wine accent to the beer.

Bottle shared by mfielden on BA - thanks, Mark! Pours dark reddish brown with a creamy tan head and good lacing. Aroma is complex and pretty tart with smoke, roastiness, coffee, earth, and red wine. Flavor is really great with red wine, dark fruit/berries, smoke, oak, bretty tartness, lots of earth, and a funk that’s slightly reminiscent of blue cheese, which I like. Palate is great, smooth yet sharp with medium body. High drinkability. Well done again, Captain Lawrence.

750ml capped batch 2. Wow!...I haven’t opened a gusher like that in quite some time. Thin black with a huge pillow like tan head. Nose is softer than I guess I was expecting. Soft notes of smoke, roasty coffee, wine, some dusty earthiness. Light body with lively carbonation. Roasty but noticable smoke malt flavor the is wrapped up in red wine. Maybe a slight bugginess going on, but it is playing well with the red wine. Unique and enjoyable.

Batch 3 - Thanks corey70! - Pours clear dk brown with a dk tan head...aroma is tart vinous oak and roasty malt, smoke...flavour is similar, sour porter, guess I’m still a bit gunshy after getting a fucked bottle of SFTO Bourbon, and I can’t really tell if the sourness in this one is intentional or not...less sour than the other bottle, but still way more than I expected...ascorbic oak tannins, some cocoa and coffee peeking thru...I’m going to try to get another bottle for a re-rate to see if this is as intended...could go either way...

GABF 2009, Darker brownish black pour. Notes of smoke, chocolate, grape sournes. Flavors that should seems all jumbled & a mess seemed to combine almost flawlessly into an unbelieveable beer. Ned to sit and consume 12oz at a sittinmg rather than to get 1oz at a time, 7 times in a row & attepmt to take notes

9/28/09 notes: poured at 2009 GABF, sampled about three times. Just to, you know, make sure I tasted everything. Color is black with attractive ruby elements. Aroma is smoky, with some sourness. Flavor starts with woody dark chocolate and smoke, along with vinous hints, grapeskin and a pinch of sourness. Finish is firmly semitart, without losing the Smoke series trademark toastiness. Delicious.

GABF 2009: Pours a dark, glistening burgundy-tinted brown with just a thin halo of suds to coat the edges of the glass. The nose was a wonderful display of deep red wine sourness and dark, smokey malts with woody grape accents. Very earthy and woody, vinious, sour, deep malty smokiness, tannic...grapey...bliss.
