Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Pours a rich brown black with a small tan head. Good roasted malt, prune, red wine, oak. Wine comes through really nice on this beer, very good.

Black pour with creamy tan head and lace. Port win and light coffee on the nose. Very nice coffee flavor with hints of the oak. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. Very nice beer.

Bottle 75cl. @ [ Tasting by cgarvieuk ]. [ Batch #2 ].
Clear dark red brown color with a huge, frothy - fizzy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, sour acidic, red wine, oak. Flavor is light heavy sweet, moderate acidic and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20090411]

Infected bottle with notes of merlot in the nose. Mahogany pour with a five-finger eggshell head that likely would have left lacing had a drank more than a sip and poured it down the drain. Sour beyond sour and missing any smoke, oak, or porter qualities. YUCK!!!

Bottle from the generosity of dchmela. Thanks as always, Dave. Hot damn, this beer is awesome! Such a big fan. Pours dark brown with a generous big bubbly light tan head with perhaps the slightest pink tint. Earthy, tannic, sour oaky notes on the nose as well as some dark fruits, complex roasted malts, and just a hint of smoke. Definitely picking up some sour cherry notes as well. Some nice cocoa flavors. Palate was smooth and light. Love the lower ABV. Amazing beer.

Pours with a dark brown hue with a small light brown head that is mostly diminishing. Aroma is of smokey wood - dark fruits, coffee, toffee, and caramel also dominate the scent of this beer. Flavor has a sour beginning, with a strong coffee and cocoa powder middle. This beer has a medium sour ending. Syrupy texture with light carbonation.

Batch 2 thanks to Cletus. A violent gusher even when chilled a bit. Pours with a mocha brown head over a cola colored body. Aroma of chocolate, wood, wine, tannins, sour cherries, florals and dark fruits. Taste is cocoa powder, smoked coffee grounds, brett, cherry, wood, tannins and goodness. Lively carbonation with a dry finish.

Bottle, batch 3. Thanks to fredandboboflo for this one. Rating number 200 for this beer. Pour is dark brown with a maroon tinge and large brown head. Aroma is strong wine up front: earthy tannins, oak, rich fruits, vanilla, a touch of smoke and a background of roasty malt. THe aroma is really spectacular. Flavor is wonderful as well. The wine dominates the early flavors. Rich red wine: earthy, fruity, tobacco and a touch of sourness. The wine lingers too. the malt is more evident in the finish and adds a nice sweetness and smokiness to balance out the sweetness/sourness of the wine. The finish is lingering wine, smoke, and porter. Great stuff
