Commercial Description:
The marriage of beer and oak is a truly wonderful thing. Just like wine, whiskey or rum, beer can also gain in complexity when aged in oak barrels. But if you take it one step further and age the beer in oak barrels that had previously held word class wine, well then you can elevate the experience even higher. This is our Smoked Porter, aged in French oak barrels that were previously used to age Merlot and Pinot Noir. We let the beer age in the barrels for around 12 months before adding a fresh dose of yeast to allow the beer to naturally carbonate in the bottle.

Bottle, sampled with jarspag and Maheu during the January ’09 ski trip to Mammoth. I like this one better than the bourbon barrel version. All around much more balanced, and the red wine adds a nice touch. Black center with a medium bubbly tan head. Aroma is smoky black chocolate with nuances of Merlot. Bitter and smoky flavor with a bit of astringent sourness on the end. Good carbonation, medium bodied with a light dose of oak mixed in. Very nice.

Huge thanks to glouglouburp for this bottle. I stuck this in the freezer for 20 minutes to avoid losing any due to a gusher. Worked like a charm. Aroma of tobacco, wood, old barn. Sour cherry, wood, smoke, leather and fruit tastes. I loved this one.

Bottle, batch #2. When I opened the beer it had to calm down for about 15 minutes before I could pour it. Pours black with a big fizzy beige head. Big nose of sour cherries, red wine and some yeast funk. Reminded me of a lot of sour ales I’ve tried. Flavor was a bit funky with some sour cherries, oak, and again red wine......Damn good stuff!

Bottle, EXTREME gusher. Popped the cap, and the beer exploded out of the bottle about 4 inches. Pours black, with a brown head. Aroma is wine, malt, wood and fruit. Flavor is roasted malt, wine, wood, and has a slight sourness to it. It’s a shame I lost about a glass of this.

Giant head exploding from the bottle. Black beer. Sour dark malt aroma. Thin wine-like character is stronger than the porter. Black cherry wine.

Bottle. Almost a black pour. This bottle was a slow gusher. We had to pour it and swirl some of the bubbles out. Once it settled it was nice as hell! Aroma of chocolate, pinot noir, and some roasted malt notes. Flavor was full of red wine, wood, light smoke and some chocolate. This was better than I expected. Now if I could just get my hands on the others!!

Bottle that my friend Joe saved for me. Pours a nice reddish black with a thick tan head. Lots of carbonation, but not a gusher. Chocolate malt, dry white wine, barrel, and sour apple aroma. Sour vinegar, chocolate malt, smoked wood, white wine taste that is very complimentary. Very smooth and easy to drink. I think the aging of the beer helps ease up on the wine in the flavor.

Batch 2. Big gusher looks black when it finally settles down. Decent aroma is vinous balsamic with wet wood. Light to medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Fairly dry, mildly sour flavors of red wine and wet wood on a blackened malt base. No real smoke in the flavor or smell, too bad.
