We had to pour it and swirl some of the bubbles out. Once it settled it was nice as hell! Aroma of chocolate, pinot noir, and some roasted malt notes. Flavor was full of red wine, wood, light smoke and some chocolate. This was better than I expected. Now if I could just get my hands on the others!! dchmela (1444), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Dec 31, 2008 Bottle that my friend Joe saved for me. Pours a nice reddish black with a thick tan head. Lots of carbonation, but not a gusher. Chocolate malt, dry white wine, barrel, and sour apple aroma. Sour vinegar, chocolate malt, smoked wood, white wine taste that is very complimentary. Very smooth and easy to drink. I think the aging of the beer helps ease up on the wine in the flavor. AmEricanbrew (1900), Wynot, Wyoming, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2008 Batch 2. Big gusher looks black when it finally settles down. Decent aroma is vinous balsamic with wet wood. Light to medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Fairly dry, mildly sour flavors of red wine and wet wood on a blackened malt base. No real smoke in the flavor or smell, too bad. StFun (534), Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2008 Nice beer, but too much wine. Gusher, big head. Acidic finish, and dry. Aroma and flavor dominated by wine. I guess this is a placeholder. alexanderj (2269), Chino Hills, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 5, 2008 Bottle from the generous golubj, enjoyed with my sister. Color was dark brown or black with a big light brown head. Aroma of wine, roasted malt, fruit, yeast and wood. Flavor was initially very winey, but that got more balanced with time. Roasted malt shines through with a bit of time. Surprised that this is the highest of these varieties. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA

7/28/2007: Captain Lawrence Smoke from the Oak pours a dark brown color with a lasting densely foamy brown head. The red wine aroma of this beer is accompanied by hints of sourness, oak char, and a whisp of smoke. The flavor includes lots of chocolate, some acidic cherry, smoke, some woody dryness, and a good deal of roasted malt underneath. The body of this beer is medium to medium-full and it is smooth on the palate. This beer has an interesting blend of flavors that really work well together.
Sample from 750 mL bottle shared at the "Columbus Tasting: Ate, now with gramatical errors" event. Thanks! Rating #156 for this beer... doubleo (1121), San Diego, California, USA

Smells of wine and wood with some dark malt and smoke. Tastes dark and smokey malts with lots of fruit wine sweetness and acidity, some wood. Pretty nice. Medium body, vibrant carbonation. This beer represents the most unique and delicious interpretation of a porter I’ve ever encountered. Pours near black with a dense, rocky, almost explosive tan head that leaves globs of lacing. The nose gives a The melding of acetic, tannic wine-accents, barrel oakiness (vanilla), smoked malt and chocolaty roasted malt creates an insanely drinkable, balanced and intense brew. Fig and port notes along with tart cherries also grace the palate. The body is a little thinner than expected and sharply carbonated. The booze is hidden past the point of recognition.
