Commercial Description:
A complex beer, with layers of flavors unfolding as this beer slides down your throat. Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor. Today only a handful of brewers produce beer reminiscent of those of the past. We use imported German smoked malt to add depth and complexity to our Smoked Porter. Sensory Profile: Aromas of smoked wood, licorice, and dark fruit. The flavor is a balance of smokiness, roasted malt, coffee, and malty sweetness. Food Pairing: A natural match for any smoked or grilled meats. The smoky flavor of the meat and the unique smoky flavor of the beer blend beautifully to elevate the enjoyment of them both.

Hand Bottled: Nearly black, moderate foamy light beige head, spotty lacing.   Mealy nose, heavy roasted malts, slight milk sugar.   Rather sweet on the tongue, strong roasted malts, but moreso a HUGE sweet milk sugar/lactose like flavor.   Doesn’t seem that smoked to me, but more so a sweet roasted goodness.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Soft hop presense, big roasted malt background, lingering lactose like sweetness.   Smoked Porter, wha?!?!   This is much more akin to a Sweet Stout than a Smoked Porter.   Whatever, I still enjoyed drinking it.   Big props to Dickinsonbeer for hand bottling this one and sending it my way!

On tap at a promo night. Rich, malty flavor. Perhas a little too much to have more than one in a sitting, but that one is worth your trouble. The smoke added some interesting flavor without overpowering the richness of the beer itself.

Cask at Brazen Head. Both aroma and flavor incorporate chocolate and dark roast coffee malts with dried fruit notes (prunes, cherries). There is some smokiness noticeable, but not enough to offend those who might be put off by rauchbiers. The smoky malts provide more of a ’seasoning’ to the sweeter malts. Overall another nice offering by CL.

Tap. Pours an almost black with a long lasting off-white head with nice lacing. Nose is smoked coffee. Flavor is coffee, smoke notes do not much match the anticipation brought on by the nose. Sprinkle of shaved chocolate on this one. This beer is pretty flat. It does not take your taste buds on a journey, but they remain local throughout. Overall, thin body and not much going on.

Growler. Thanks to hopdog for sharing this one. Did this side by side with the Smoke from the Oak.

Black body with thin head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt. Taste is a little thin. Had a nice vanilla, oaky taste to it. Easy on the palate. Very enjoyable.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this growler... Appears a black with dark brown edges when held to the light. A small dark tan head that slowly fades out to a mild floating cap of foam. Smell is of cocoa, smoked meat, roasted nuts, beef jerky, caramel, along with some freshly frothed cream. Taste is lightly tart but substantiated with notes of beef jerky, cocoa, caramel, and nuts. Mouthfeel is medium/full bodied with a caramel smoothness fading into a moderately dry finish.

Growler acquired in trade with puzzl (thanks!). Poured a dark, dark brown color iwth a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of lighter smoke, roast, and chocolate. The smoke was not overpowering and added a nice spin on the aroma. Tastes of chocolate, roast, vanilla creme, and a trace of smoke. Body on the thin side. DIdn’t knock my socks off but was still enjoyable.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this growler. Pours a deep dark brown with a smaller tan bubbly head. Aroma of chocolate, some smoke, toasty malts, nuts and some fruitiness. Flavor of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of smoke, some cocoa and on the dry side.
