Commercial Description:
A complex beer, with layers of flavors unfolding as this beer slides down your throat. Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor. Today only a handful of brewers produce beer reminiscent of those of the past. We use imported German smoked malt to add depth and complexity to our Smoked Porter. Sensory Profile: Aromas of smoked wood, licorice, and dark fruit. The flavor is a balance of smokiness, roasted malt, coffee, and malty sweetness. Food Pairing: A natural match for any smoked or grilled meats. The smoky flavor of the meat and the unique smoky flavor of the beer blend beautifully to elevate the enjoyment of them both.

On tap, this poured a opaque brown with no head or lacing to speak of. There is a hint of smoke in the aroma and flavor, but honestly not much. I’m glad for that, as I’m not a huge "smoked beer" fan. However, there are the traditional chocolaty and creamy flavors of a traditional porter. Maybe a bit thin, but surely drinkable. Good by standards of the style, but only fair in comparison to many of Scott’s other offerings.

On tap at Blind Tiger. Poured dark brown with almost no head.Smelled of coffee, licorice. Nice smooth mouthful, almost thin, which makes it easily drinkable, and yes, it has a nice smoked flavor to it. Found it medium bodied, with a nice finish.

Growler from Bierkraft, Brooklyn. Medium tan head. Aroma of smoke, some dark roasted malt, coffee. Smokey earthiness is the primary taste characteristic, some roasted malt underneath. Dry finish emphasizes smoke. Drank in Sam Adams’ new Boston lager glass, which may have overemphasized the smokiness. Usually more of a fan of rauchbiers such as Schlenkerla, so it isn’t that I hate smoke beers.

Excellent tan head offers more than fair lacing over the dark brown body. Quite aromatic. Strong biscuity flavours accompany us until the end. You’d chew on them. Firm and excellent mouthfeel. Mild fruitiness appears as the finish approaches, mostly blackberry-like. Almost no acidity. Toasty, cookie-like malt profile. Balanced indeed. A smooth and most competent porter in which the smoke is hardly noticeable beyond a soft woodsy earthiness.

Tap. Offering’s aroma is heavy in smoke. Very nice. Very dark pour with little lacing. Much smoother then anticipated. This beer has me looking for others.

Rerate: From growler - thanks Jon. Pours with the most perfect, prototypical pockmarked ecru head. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Smoky, but soft, moderately hopped (forest leafiness). Deliciously softly sweet (brown sugar). Just absolutely killer, and so drinkable!

Original: Level of smokiness is perfect; not delicate nor overdone. A little bit of chocolate sweetness below a slightly creamy body. Really robust (woody, smoky, a touch of acrid bitterness). Completely sessionable. Thanks Bendo for the 22.

I have had the smoked porter many times. At the brewery and at random events and bars on tap. I don’t mind that the levels of smoke vary from time to time. It may scream inconsistency but to me its not. Its also mood and what I have before and after and during (food) that changes my perceptions of the leverl of smoke in this one in particular. What I mean by this is the flavor is so balanced and it is such a smooth easy drinking porter that I enjoy it any time. Overall the aroma and taste has a nice moderate smoked malt essence with a nice hint of mild bitter hops, very well utilizes. A little warming and comforting, I enjoy it every time.

Pours dark brown; opaque in the glass. Aroma of smoky malt and roasted coffee. A bit of liquorice and smoky malt in the taste. Fairly dry and smoky finish.
