Commercial Description:
A complex beer, with layers of flavors unfolding as this beer slides down your throat. Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor. Today only a handful of brewers produce beer reminiscent of those of the past. We use imported German smoked malt to add depth and complexity to our Smoked Porter. Sensory Profile: Aromas of smoked wood, licorice, and dark fruit. The flavor is a balance of smokiness, roasted malt, coffee, and malty sweetness. Food Pairing: A natural match for any smoked or grilled meats. The smoky flavor of the meat and the unique smoky flavor of the beer blend beautifully to elevate the enjoyment of them both.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a small off-white head. Smell: Chocolatey, almost reminiscient of a Tootsie Roll. Fair amount of roast. Vague dark fruitiness. Smoked wood scent, sure, but I get far more wood than smoke, which is reasonably mild. Taste: Bittersweet chocolate flavor with a mild sweetness and roastiness. Again, for me, it’s more woody and smokey. Faint fruit hints. Slight spicy, earthy bitterness. Roasty, wooden finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: Why, that’s not half bad at all! Finishing a few glasses from the growler was a breeze.

Poured black with a creamy brown head. Great looker. Aroma of sweet malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and a hint of smoke. Chocolate flavors to start with a hint of dark fruit. Finished with a hint of smoke. Very drinkable and light.

Another Cpt. Lawrence sipper, complex, on-tap at Barcade. My clear winner here over a long night. The smoke is instrinsic, its the smoked malt. The aroma is rather ginger. A whisp of head, lace and a fresh beer. Medium mouthfeel, and drying bittersweet finish. Comes to a fruitiness in the mouth.

Growler filled at Bellport Beer & Soda. Pours an opaque black with a thin tan head that disappeared after the first sip. Very pleasant aroma of light smoke, roasted malt, and chocolate. I like that the smokiness does not appear to be overpowering this beer. The flavor is again light smoke, roasted malt and chocolate. The smoke flavor is well proportioned against the roasted malt and chocolate flavors and compliments them well. Medium bodied. Soft finish. This is an excellent smoked porter.

On tap at the brewery: Pours very dark with a tan head. Aroma is very pleasant, smoke and roasted malt. Taste is very similar. Very smoky flavor, but not overpowering. Slight hints of a steak flavor as well as an obviously large amount of roasted barley or black patent malt flavor as well. Mouth feel is also pleasant. Full bodied and soft feeling. Great finish as well. Overall, an excellent beer.

On tap at Hop Devil. Typical dark black porter color with moderate tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and little extra smokiness. Some chocoalte and a little berry. MIld in taste and finish. Thin but somewhat soft mouthfeel. Well crafted, not overdone. Makes for a good session beer. 7/4/7/4/13 Rerate: On tap at brewery tasting room. Big frothy tan head. Roasted coffee and chocolate flavors more pronounced. Gentle smokiness. 7/5/7/4/14
