Poured a dark, dark brown color iwth a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of lighter smoke, roast, and chocolate. The smoke was not overpowering and added a nice spin on the aroma. Tastes of chocolate, roast, vanilla creme, and a trace of smoke. Body on the thin side. DIdn’t knock my socks off but was still enjoyable. jcwattsrugger (5578), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

Strong biscuity flavours accompany us until the end. You’d chew on them. Firm and excellent mouthfeel. Mild fruitiness appears as the finish approaches, mostly blackberry-like. Almost no acidity. Toasty, cookie-like malt profile. Balanced indeed. A smooth and most competent porter in which the smoke is hardly noticeable beyond a soft woodsy earthiness. Aroma of sweet toasty dark caramel and chocolate malts. Body starts full, sweet and dark malty with a hint of tart balance and dark fruits. A nice porter with a slightly out of character tartness, but it seems to mesh well here. MartinT (5075), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 6, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A veil of foam scurries into the reddish blackness.
-Delicate roasted smoke rises from the chocolate blackberry purée.
-Roastiness is stuck to the molasses, as a powdery character (yeast?) is felt underneath.
-The rich maltiness doesn’t necessarily fit with the extremely low carbonation here, methinks.
What if you dig deeper?
-The smoke is never overwhelming, but rather a companion to the rest of the porter flavors.
-The finish is roasty, and is able to carry some of the fruity sweetness as well.
-I found this to be a decent, uneventful smoked porter; perhaps the cask was not its proper vessel.

Smells of chocolate, light smoke and coffee. Tastes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, some spices and lightly smoky. Can’t wait to try the barrel aged version of this one. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 26, 2006 tap at dba. Dark brown/black beer, thick light brown head, sticky and lingering. Aroma is of dark malts, coffee and a bit of beech wood smoke as well. Roasty/charry aroma, some salty licorice aroma. Flavour is very charry/chewy. Dark licorice, salt, heavy roastiness and smokiness, but the smoke lies behind all of the the other roasty malt notes. Sweet and chewy with some light leathery notes as well. Dark bitter chocolate with a long dryish roasty finish. More stout than porter, but either way it a tasty pint.
