Commercial Description:
Pasteurised strong lager.
First brewed in 1959. Sold in a 330ml bottle in 1989 as "the beer you will never forget". In May 1996 Elephant Beer was repackaged into an emerald green 275ml bottle.
UK version is brewed at the Carlsberg Northampton brewery.
Carlsberg Elephant Beer is an amber-coloured beer with big intensity in its aroma, and with a distinct maltyness. There is notes of honey in the aroma. The palate of Carlsberg Elephant shows a good balance between a good body from the alcohol, and a discrete sweetness which is tamed by the sophisticated bitterness of the aftertaste.

Immediate reaction is grass. I feel like I just drank grass clippings, fresh grass clippings. The aroma is malty and grassy. It’s appearance is yellow and ordinary. Its taste is not unusual, but not good either, with a definite grassy taste. I always say it’s important to be distinct, but not in this way. It’s not particularly easy on the palate either. This is not enjoyable.

11.2 ounce bottle- pours a really beautiful golden orange with a thick, though short lived, head. The aroma is all yeast and pizza dough. Typical malt liquor taste, slightly metallic with a strong alcohol taste. Highly carbonated. I suspect most malt liquors of being cheap alcohol delivery systems, fair only.

Pours a darker golden color. Smells like swwet malt and is a little fruity like apples. Head is 2 inches but quickly shrinks. Flavor is of old nasty malt, fruity esters and alcohol. The regular Carlsberg lager is much better.

Not too bad. A small, creamy head covering a yellow body with decent retention and pretty good lacing. A very odd smell: dank marijuana with some alcohol and fruit. Alcohol is evident in the taste and not well hidden. There is some grass as well in the background. Fizzy bubbles cover a slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Sweet skunky nose. Deep yellow-orange color with a big, but short-lasting head. Flavor was in general pretty clean, with decent hop presence. The alcohol burned a bit much, almost like taking a beer and adding a shot of vodka. Balance just was not there. Not horrible, but definitely not a good representation of a strong Lager.

THOUGHTS: Basically just an amped-up lager. Smelled bad just like most lagers but had a slightly nicer flavor although it was still a little harsh. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium yellow with a small to average, white head that kept a thin sheet. The aroma was light to moderate grain and straw, moderate grassy hops and light to moderate yeast. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter and sour; while the finish was lightly to moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter and slightly sour with an average duration. The flavor was malt then metallic bitterness. The light to medium body was watery then a little dry with lightly tingly carbonation and a metallic finish.

This is really quite nice and more hoppy than expected. It is a somewhat deep, orangish gold with a medium white head that steadily dissipates to a thin foamy top. The aroma is grain with sweet fruity wine & alcohol, herbal and piney hops. The taste starts with a nice blend of toasty grain, sweet fruity wine, alcohol, and quite a bit of herbal and piney hop flavour, along with fairly good sweetness and bitterness. The hops flavours slowly weaken and blur, though, which is too bad, but traces of their flavour last as does the bitterness. It maintains a good sweet-bitter balance throughout and is a lot like a cross between a less refined good German pilsner and a high-ABV malt liquor.
