Commercial Description:
Pasteurised strong lager.
First brewed in 1959. Sold in a 330ml bottle in 1989 as "the beer you will never forget". In May 1996 Elephant Beer was repackaged into an emerald green 275ml bottle.
UK version is brewed at the Carlsberg Northampton brewery.
Carlsberg Elephant Beer is an amber-coloured beer with big intensity in its aroma, and with a distinct maltyness. There is notes of honey in the aroma. The palate of Carlsberg Elephant shows a good balance between a good body from the alcohol, and a discrete sweetness which is tamed by the sophisticated bitterness of the aftertaste.

On tap, in Paris, at Quartier Latin. Golden coloration, with a white head. Watery and a little bitter. Boring...

Bottle -- Vaguely cloudy yellowy gold brew with a surprisingly dense medium head with some retention and ample lacing. Corny/malty aroma. The high alcohol level doesn’t give the beer any of that gorgeous alcohol warmth you find in other strong beers (including in this style). Rather, it seems to amplify its not particulalry pleasant malty flavour, making it fairly hard going without something to offset the flavour (maybe a hot salami pizza would be good). It’s got all the subtlety of an elephant, which is perhaps how it gets its name. Another over-priced import.

Can (33 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear golden with small and short head. Skunky and unclean malt aroma, with burnt rubber, and alcohol. Medium bodied and smooth. Sweet and cloying with low bitterness.

Rated 4/20/07: Well to be honest this beer is junk, Danish malt likka nonetheless. Mildly skunk aroma with a sprinkling of sugar, I’m actually glad the aroma is subdued. Nice pour, dark yellow sizeable white head and lots of lacing. Thick and sticky, not a pleasant experience for the palate. Flavor is rough and filled with adjuncts. Malt liquor is the same across the globe and knows no boundaries. Not a pleasing drink in any regards.

Smells like an overly-skunky heinekin. Basically heinekin on steroids. Strong alcohol flavor and sticky-sweet taste and feel. I’d been hearing good things, but this one did not deliver.

Can. Pale golden colour with a small white head. Aroma of meat and vegetable broth. Salty flavour, quite alcoholic. Sticky mouthfeel. Miserable.

330ml bottle. Skunky malt aroma with some floral hops and alcoholic vinous fruitiness. Pours a hazy sort of gold with a white head that doesn’t want to stick around. Moderately full body, sweetness is apparent, some honeyish malt with some underlying skankiness comes through, some light wine-like fruitiness also in there. Finish is moderately bitter with some floral hopiness apparent, alcohol flavour seeps through drying the palate. Not sure why i bought a 6 pack of these, I guess its been a while since i tried one, it’s rocket fuel more than anything else.
