Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Dark brown w. small head and a lot of floating objects. Chocolate sweetness, liqourice, some coffe notes giving way to a slightly bitter finish. Above medium body - not full enough! Nice.

Dark brown stout with toffee coloured head. High carbonation. Medium complex flavour. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, a touch of black currants? Sourness and (to much) liqourice towards the end. Pepper? Palate would have been watery if it wasnt for the tongue biting carbonation. Overall a just above average stout. A bit out of balance. What should have been a chocolate stout is wrecked by liqourice and carbonation. (try youngs double instead)

Dark brown to black color, with a little tan head, although fast disappearing. The aroma is some coffee and hints of licorice, a bit metallic too. Flavor is roasted malt, lots of coffee (thats nice) some chocolate and toffee. It has a nice coffee bitterness in the end. Thebrew does have body, but a bit more volume would suit it. Well i got to admit that my relationship to Carlsberg is a bit strange, at first i hated them for discontinueing the Wiibroe Imperial Stout, but now i got to give them thumbs up for the Semper Ardens beers.

Very Dark or black color with a quick dissappearing brownish head. The taste is roasted malts with notes of coffee and chocolate. Finishes slightly bitter.

Dark brown color. Hazy, burned and roasted malt, chocolate and liquorice aroma. It was quite carbonated and the flavor died early. Some malty notes in the finish. Nice brew, but lack the flavor and intensity for a good stout.

0.7 L bottle. Black beer with a decent head, and an aroma dominated by chocolate and some licorice and malt. Taste was sweet and dominated by chocolate but also had pleasant flavours of smoky malt and bitterness from licorice and hops. Too much carbondioxide, though. A good beer, but too expensive.

Beautiful! Nice and dark stout. Good chocolate and liquorice flavor with a roasted malt tone. Mild and smooth.

Bottle #769 (vintage 2000) - Tasted in the cellar of the Carlsberg Brewery.
Tall substantial tan head. Aroma is a little old and fusty but has a very heavy tone of chocolate - a lot more penetrating than the fresh version! Flavor is mostly bitter chocolate and is a lot fuller and flavored than a fresh Criollo Stout. A really nice experience!
