Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Pours black with short head. Some chocolate in the aroma and dark roasted malts. Body too light. In mouth more chocolate and sweet malts.

Bottle. Very brown colour with decent light brown head. Aroma offers malt, bitter chocolate, coffee and spices. Not to powerfull aroma though. Flavor is rather sweet malt - some of which burnt. Cane sugar and spices as well. Average finish.

Dark red colored, little light brown head. Strong chocolate dominates this aroma, sweet licorice and coffee also there with mild alcohol. Medium bodied. Flavor is more sour with still this dominating chocolate, still not so obvious here than in aroma. Aftertaste turns to licoricy with drying tone, mild alcohol also comes up.

75 cL bottle, vintage 2004 at Jacobson from the Carlsberg cellar. Pours deep brown to black with a dense chocolate brown head, large sediments floating around - tasty though :) Aroma is thick chocolate with a mild roasted note - has a whiff of a wineous tone too. Flavour is smooth chocolate - the ageing suites this brew well. Has a soft smooth chocolate and malty finish with a mild wineous tone. Nice.

[Sampled in 2005.] Black brew with wonderful cafe au lait head and lots of ingredients with the notes of licorice and coffeechocs. Could have more body, but some years in the cellar will do that.

Comments: A fair stout, but lacking in malt thickness, mostly grainy and chocolatey flavours and a bit overly fizzy.
