Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Bottle. Dark brown body with a reddish tint, looks clear, with a nice, beige head. Coffee aroma in the start, some chocolate and burnt malt, and dried fruit. Far from bad, but I expected a bit more. Burnt flavor with coffee-beans, quite sweet as well, and with some dried fruits. Oily, quite full mouthfeel, with a warming feeling towards to end. There’s flavors of fruits and coffee bitterness in the finish. A quite nice beer, even though I expected a fuller, heavier beer, but I guess it would be better with some food than on its own. Flaske. Flot flot skum. Sortbrun farve, og masser af brændthed i duften. Smagen er til at begynde med brændt med en god del bitterhed. Sødmen rammer først lidt senere med en anelse chokolade.

Bottle. Large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Pitch black color. At first the aroma was very liquorish, but as it warmed up, aroma of chocolate, hints of brown sugar, light hops, roasted malt, fruit. At the very end of drinking this Sweet Stout, the coffee came heavily into play. Medium bodied with an average carbonation and light dry texture. Moderated sweet flavor with light bitter notes. Sweet coffee like finish, with underlying liquorish lingering in mouth. Ok Sweet Stout.

The bottle was two years old - thanks to sk8viking! The aroma is malty, with a tint of alcohol, there is also some fruit. The flavor was very round (it was two years old) and you could taste the malt, and some fruit. A good stout in my opinion.

Bottle: Pours a dark amber. Hints of pine and chocolate in the nose. Tan head with a tinge of green. Settles out slowly to film of bubbles. Weaping lacing. Long light body with cocoa from start to finish. A muted bitterness that is present half way thru and paralells the sweetness to finish. Thanks to Maria for another great Stout.

More bitterness than most chocoalte stouts. Fairly light, pronounced cocoa aroma. Coffee, vanilla, lingering taste, which maskes the alcohol strength. Actually very good, though I’m not in the habit of praising Carlsberg products!
