Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Black as the night and the head is nice and creamy. The aroma has a lot of chocolate. The first bottle I tasted was back in 2004, and that version had an unpleasant taste of cocktail berries, that was way too dominant. But luckily that note was gone, or only remained as a hint in the following versions I tasted. So the flavour has chocolate, a hint of berries and licorice. It’s smooth and nice, it’s one that can be enjoyed by the less hardcore stout lovers.

Bottled. Very dark brown coloured with a medium sized brown head. Roasted and malty with notes of liqourice, chocolate and caramel. A bit fruity and not hoppy enough.

700 ml bottle, via Storm. First off who the heck uses a 700 ml bottle? I think this is the first I’ve ever seen. Pours a clear dark ruby brown under a two finger foamy and creamy dark brown head that left tons of lacing as it receded. Aroma is pretty light, just some roasted malt and coffee primarilly. Some slight chocolate, smoke and light hoppiness. Flavor has a nutty and roasty malt start, then fades to a grainy finish with a little chocolate, coffee, and smoke. A moderate level of bitterness throughout keeps the sweetness in check for the most part. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a fairly watery texture up front and a slight stickiness on the finish. Moderate fizzy carbonation. Not so great for a Stout, but OK in it’s own right. Way too light and not nearly enough roast.

70 cl bottle from MiP. Thanks! Deep dark brown color. Roasted malt and licorice in the aroma. Malty sweetish flavor (mango, pear) at first, flowing into a roastbitter flavor with licorice. Full bodied, almost thick mouthfeel. Long but pleasant roast aftertaste with pear. Quite nice!

Bottle, 700 ml. Pours deep brown with a glimse of red. Small tan head. Sweetish aromas of dark toasted malts, dark dried fruits and milk-chocolate. Taste is sweet and mellow; mainly malts and caramel. Medium hopbitterness, low carbonation. Oily mouthfeel with a salty and slight bitter finish.
