Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Exciting and different, but not my taste. Not as creamy and definetely not as sweet as normal for a danish stout. A lot of different unusual tastes as spruce needles, grass, hedge and other undefinable things from the front garden in the provinces. I think I can taste the fact that this beer is made to be drinked with food - it is just too weird to be drinked witout accessory.

Dark brown color with a a full tan head. Roasted malt and dark chocolate aromas are weak, yet stills wafting about. Dark chocolate, toasted bread and mild caramel are present. Lacks depth and much in depth and any viscosity. A cross between a foreign and sweet stout.

Bottled at Jacobsen Brewpub. Surprisingly pale porter, more red than brown. Very pronounced chocolatey aroma with some red currants and slightly smokey. Quite complex though, with hints of chocolate, coffee and licorice. Some butter in the aromge that is very obvious in the taste. Like eating a bar of (too expensive) chocolate.

Black with bubbly browny/white head. roasted coffee notes, Some bitter chocolate. The carbonation is medium. The texture is not as creamy as it looks. The finish is medium - moka bitterness and not long lasting! Just OK!

Tested 4/6-05. Bottle: Dark red to Black body: Nie cream foam. Aroma of bitter/dark chocolate, and a little of alcohol bitterness. Bitter chocolate, and alcohol bitternes inthe end. Full body. A nice stout, who I will prefer with a good cigar.

Flatly dark as secret desires and with a head of large, frail bubbles that go yonder in just about an instant, Criollo Stout is not a pretty beer. Nor is it refined, with a shallow, unpleasant attack of bitterness amid heavy notes of too-dark chocolate. Carlsberg can do better -- so why don’t they? The desire to go one better inherent in the "Semper Ardens" name is nowhere to be felt, except in the marketing.
