Commercial Description:
Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Clear dark brown body. Roast and chocolatey aroma - pretty light. Cocoa powder and start flavor with bitter dry chocolate in the finish. Weka and uninspiring.

Bottle, courtesy of sk8viking! Poured a medium brown with a short-lived, loose beige head. I only found a small dose of the expected chocolate presence in the nose... found medium berries, other dark fruits, caramel, and twigs in the mildly-roasted aroma. Dark fruits also had a solid presence in the flavor department.. with dry chocolate, heavy bread dough, licorice, and lightly-roasted coffee rounding it out. Light-medium bodied and a tad sticky on the front half of the palate, evolving to graininess at the back-end. Decent and interesting stout... but far from great.

Thanks Jason! Pours to a dark brown body with a thin white head. The aroma is hard to describe. Perhaps black licorice and black currants? The flavor is very light. Sweet malts. Light black currant. The palate is medium bodied and slick.

Sample from a bottle at a beer tasting event on The Rover in Gothenburg, January 14, 2006. Very nice dark color. Clear chokolate in scent and taste. A bit of coffee in the flavor as well. Not the best of the Semper Ardens series, but far from the more commercial Carlsberg products.

Bottle. Opaque/mahogany, thin looking beige head. Simple and smooth chocolate flavor, not much else going on except for some roasted coffee notes. Very similar to Sam Adam’s Chocolate Bock, but at least it isn’t $20/bottle.

Dark. Much chocolate in aroma and taste. OK but stouts are not my favourite beers.

Very nice sweet stout, but the price for it is very high in the super markets, but it is all worth trying it out. Good kind of spicy flavour.

Bottle. Brown head. Very dark red body. Choccolate aroma. Choccolate caramel flavor. Pleasantly low carbonated. Bitterness just tastable. I feel like tossing a lump of vanilla icecream into it! Hardly a secret now: I like it.
