A particularly english specimen. Special Brew is favourored among vagrants and the socially dangerous. It has a crisp yet rewarding taste that some lager drinkers consider to be not dissimilar to "brasso" brand abrasive metal polish. The sensation on the tongue can be described as the taste from siphoning high octane petrol from a dragster whilst the suble nuances of benzine and bleach counteract the initial flirty, tangy flavour.
It is a favourite of youths and is best enjoyed with "Bernard Matthew" brand reformed turkey burgers and is a satisfying finish to an evening spent watching a stolen car smouldering.
The advice on the front of the packaging suggests it should be enjoyed in moderation and as such the educated tippler should partake of only a small amount due to it’s rather heady potency.
The average daily intake should be no less than twelve 500ML servings. Two noted side effects from this fine favourite is the ability to talk for hours about a subject that one knows little about and the compulsive need to ask for spare change.
Other noted phenomenon include violent peristaltic mishaps.

Dec 6, 2009 Can. Slightly hazy golden orange body with a foamy white head that lasts a while. Sweet aroma has hints of malt, rice and hops. Flavour pretty much mirrors the aroma. Medium body, high carbonation and a longish sweet/bitter finish. This wasn’t as bad as expected but was far from great.

Clear medium yellow color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, cabbage water, alcohol, vegetable, cardboard. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration, peppery - alcoholic finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090808]

Oct 16, 2009 Can in KL. Not bad looking, bright gold with frothy head and decent retention. Aroma is phenolic yet not uninviting. Smells mainly malty and sweet. Palate is pretty smooth but with considerable alcohol in the finish. The alcohol flavors are pronounced but they keep it dry. Evaporates fast on the tongue and for a malt liquor ain’t that bad.

Aug 31, 2009 Brewed by Carlsberg Malawi but this description seems to fit it closely so I’ll assume it’s the same recipe. Maybe I got a skunky bottle but the smell of this thing was a cross between armpit sweat and smelly shoes. Totally unappealing. The colour isn’t so bad however, though it could use some more head than the sorry amount it showed me when I poured it in my glass. Taste is good, a little syrupy and malty, with a hint of hops. Tastes a lot like the other carlsberg brands, and if there’s a difference, it’s hard to detect. It’s a decent brew but not really "special", and there’s no way to tell why it’s so "special" aside from the crappy smell.

Aug 8, 2009 Canned. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is quite grainy, grassy and also a bit alcoholic with some slight glueish notes. Flavour is quite much the same. Still not the very harsh style malt liquor. More ML than ESL like.

Jul 1, 2009 Comes in an attractive gold can with a white middle third. The can sports the maker’s name, Carlsberg, on the top third, Special Brew is emblazoned around the white hoop and some sort of crown in the bottom third completes the design.

Mar 5, 2009 Ok aroma. Quite malty but man ... so hoppy and bitter. Metallica & alcohol - nice rock album concept but in a beer? Good for getting a high though.
