Chocolate and malts in the nose, with a little sweetness and coffee in the taste. Decent mouthfeel. Nothing too exciting but drinkable yet. Jwasciuk (194), Lowell, Michigan, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/20 | Apr 12, 2007 pours muddy dark black with a frothy light brown head. Aroma is malty, cookies, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and strong coffee, and broth. Flavor is well balanced and stouty. Finish is more toasted. Medium bodied, watery buy yet creamy, softly carbonated. Its not so great unless your broke. purduebacchus (39), USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 9, 2007 Not bad at all for a cheaper stout. It’s great to find a stout for a drinker on a budget, too. I purchased this in the 27 oz bottle. Very dark, slightly harsh taste similar to a fresh cup of coffee. Earthy notes are present and compliment the overall robust personality of this beer. I’m definatley buying this again. For the price this is a steal. I also enjoyed the oversized twist off bottle. Very unique for a stout. ddinneb (3), Sylvania, Ohio, USA does not count | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 15, 2007 chocolate, coffee, earthy, black, lightly bitter, full body, lively:
This is my first rating; I am passionate about beer/stouts that have a full flavor and a bit harsh. I get very disappointed at restaurants that have a fine wine selection and a dismal beer selection. When I find something special I buy and give away bottles (sorry never cans) so people can evaluate. Sheaf is one of those, I like to share and order "by the case." Thanks for reading!

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 30, 2007 bottle - This one came in a big 27 oz bottle with a twist cap. It reminded me of a cheap 40 and I found myself hoping it tasted a lot better than that. It pours black with a thick tan head and has the expected dark roast malt aroma of a stout. The stout flavor, while not complex, actually holds up quite well. Some coffee notes join the fairly well balanced roast malts. Medium bodied and a straightforward stout, it’s at least quite quaffable. scanman (146), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 28, 2007 Aroma of very toasted malts and coffee and some spice (almost pepper). Pours a cola/coffee brown with thin tan head. Very drinkable and great flavors of molasses and sweet coffee. Not really chocolatey, but there is a lot of richness. Nice bitter finish. It has stood the test of time because it’s simply a great stout. Not as sweet at some stouts, it’s more molases than coffe or chocolatey.
