Almost a metallic tinge to the smell actually with the alcohol present. Smells better in a glass anyway. Pours pitch black and thick, like tan head on top. Quite an odd flavour. Sour bitterness to it, chocolate coffee body comes with it, but strongly bitter. That metallic aroma comes through a bit in the flavour end. A few little spicey hop hints too. Not my to my liking. | 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Dec 3, 2003 Pours black with a thin light brown head and a few spots of lace. Heavily vinous nose with notes of raisins and band-aids. Moderately sour with a medicinal off-note. A bit of coffee in the finish. Light to medium bodied with a cushion of carbonation. Pretty tolerable but I don't ever want to drink it again. Reid (1090), Salem, Oregon, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 6, 2003 I bought this in plain brown 1 pt 9.6 oz bottle with an old fashioned style plain label.
The beer poured very well and left a thick tan head atop a dark brown almost black beer..the head went down somewhat but still clung on to the edges.
This has a great stout smell the roasted almost burnt malts..i love this, this one smelled better than Guiness.
Wonderful taste IMO, its a good mix of burnt malt and good hoppiness..i tasted loads of caramel, treacle and a hint of black espresso coffee..delicious.
feels really smooth on the mouth but leaving sensation all along the tongue.
Very drinkable..good stout at a not too bad price will drink again!

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 28, 2003 The aroma was nice. Chocolate, coffee and red wine were present. The taste was similar. Nice burn malt falvor. The finish reminded me of bakers chocolate. I liked the bitter finish. Winchester (75), Struggle Town NSW, Australia
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 28, 2003 Was quite keen to get the lid off this brew. Ive developed a liking for stouts, and while this one wasn't the best ever (bitter aftertaste) it certainly wasn't the worst beer Ive ever had my paws on. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 16, 2003 A stout with a twist-off top? How novel. Muddy-black with a brown head that rapidly diminished. Aroma of coffee, cough syrup, root beer, and mild hops. Coffee flavor and moderate sweetness. Finish and aftertaste are rather antiseptic. Fizzy palate. Some people seem to like this stuff. Not me. This is the worst stout I've ever had. xsketchyx (184), Oregon, USA

| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Aug 25, 2003 Very light colored for astout, with a lactic, milky nose. Very sweet and slightly chalky, milky, lactic and chocolatey towards the end. Some nice flavors, but a bit too sweet and artificial tasting. 40oz bottle was funny.
